Review of Five and Ten
Five and Ten: Upscale Southern Cuisine with French Influences
If you're looking for an upscale dining experience that offers creative and contemporary Southern cooking, Five and Ten is the perfect spot for you. Located in the Five Points neighborhood in Athens, Georgia, this James Beard Award-winning restaurant is built out of a century-old house designed by famed Athens architect Fred Orr. The restaurant is known for its gourmet farm-to-table menu, extensive fine wine list, and authentic service. The cuisine is elevated Southern with French influences, making for a unique and delicious dining experience.
The menu changes regularly, offering a variety of unique and tasty dishes. Some of the highlights include the carpaccio, chilled pea soup, cornbread, and rose petal cake. The pork belly and fried catfish are also excellent choices. If you're a fan of risotto, be sure to try theirs, as it's one of the best in town. The restaurant also offers Sunday brunch and weekly burger nights.
The decor and ambiance are welcoming and relaxing, with an antique house vibe. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the service is top-notch. The restaurant can readily accommodate dietary restrictions, making it a great choice for those with food allergies or special diets.
While the prices are on the higher side, the quality of the food and service justifies the cost. The restaurant charges an additional service fee to help offset the hourly wage paid to their servers, which may be off-putting to some customers. However, the fee is explained upfront, and the restaurant is transparent about its pricing policies.
If you're looking for a fantastic dining experience in Athens, Five and Ten is a must-visit. The restaurant is sometimes overlooked but is truly one of the best in town. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a delicious meal, Five and Ten is sure to impress.

Five and Ten provides a great customer experience no doubt. They ensure the front of the store gives off a relaxing, inviting atmosphere.
However, behind the scenes the kitchen staff are hostile and unusually cruel to any new employees. Reminded me of a highly unnecessary hazing ritual. I worked here for a few months my senior year of highschool, entering the serving industry with energy and passion to learn. As I have continued to work in the said industry, I have realized how unprofessional these 'professionals' actually were, and have since had to re-learn how high end restaurants actually operate . . . with some degree of compassion at the very least.
Passive aggressiveness was standard and there was a consistent air of superiority, especially towards me, the dishwasher. They would deny me my shift meal often with no regard. Unwarranted blatant disrespect aside, they would continually pull me away to
make me scrub the SAME staircase over and over rather than have me actually be productive. Even going so far as to make me scrub it when something unrelated prompted them to react in a negative way, very blatantly taking it out on me.
After months of busywork and inquiring about my desire to learn prep cook skills, I was even told by the managers I was going to be promoted and would no longer have to do certain tasks (I.e. scrub the stairs was the example they gave me - they said they were going to hire someone new for the position) and I was elated!
Next day, I was told to come in early to learn the ropes. I come in with a fresh mindset and renewed energy, and immediately I'm asked to clean the stairs. I attempted to remind them of my supposed promotion and they acted as though it was never mentioned and even went so far as to openly scoff at the proposal. For close to two months afterward there was no mention of the 'promotion' and they kept making me clean the same staircase. It was shortly after this I resigned as the workplace was so toxic.
I am posting this review now - 5 years later - because I am still having to relearn negative reactive behaviors and realizing that most restaurants operate WAY above this standard of kindness and morality
Seemed like they just wanted to push me for months until I quit - Which I did
If you are a customer, enjoy the food and atmosphere! Just be aware the kitchen staff are begrudgingly tucked away and hostile.
I would NOT recommend working here. The same staff has been in place for years and they do not take kindly to any new people interfering with their careers (young men specifically to be quite honest)

Fantastic dining experience. We had duck and catfish which was great. Rachel provided excellent service and spot on with the recommendations. Great place for special events.

Sitting here now as I couldn’t wait a minute to sing the praises of Rachel B. Tonight was our anniversary and she couldn’t have made it better than she did. For eight years I’ve eyed this place thinking I would save it for the right night and I couldn’t be more thankful we chose 5&10 for tonight. If you’re debating what is for dinner, stop and call that Uber. The wine, trout, pimento cheese, cornbread, risotto, and spaghetti were better than the stars I’m allowed to give.
Thanks Rachel for making this night special and we will see you again!

Best of the best for culinary experience, service is a quirky blend of witty and kind, while the atmosphere delivers on an understated southern elegance ...

Hank,
Please accept my apology for my reaction to your decision to not refund my $200 charge through Open Table. Although not an excuse, I was caught off guard as I never saw the fine print about the 48 hour window to cancel. As I said before, I called to cancel the reservation 30 hours in advance because I do care about others and how it would be important for you to know that we could not make it. You obviously have a lovely restaurant and I regret that we were unable to enjoy it. I hope that you put the $200 to good use. Best wishes to you and yours. Leslie Parsons

Love love love. The service was spectacular. Our server went out of his way to let us have a leisurely meal and we felt so special there. The food was out of the world. We loved the butternut squash soup and shared the Steak. Omg the cornbread. Yum.

Phenomenal drink and food menu. Everything was both prepared and plated to perfection. Inventive tastes, internationally inspired cuisine. I couldn't have asked for more.

Absolutely delicious anniversary dinner. I had the beef tenderloin which was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. The staff the was incredible, very clean, and nice atmosphere. I look forward to dinning at Five and Ten again.

I love this place, however this was a bit of a miss tonight. Grilled artichoke would have been delicious had it been cooked enough to be edible. The veg in the lamb dish was also raw, though that was edible at least, and the lamb was perfection. Mackerel starter was seriously unseasoned. Dessert saved the day.

We ate outside so atmosphere was ok. My daughter ordered the salmon it came out very raw and fishy tasting. My wife order the NY Strip the cost was $55.00 so she was expecting this awesome steak, well no. It was very bland no season or taste at all. We overheard our waiter telling another table he could bring them some bread but we were never offered any bread. I guess for the price I was really expecting a really good dinner but they failed miserably. I do not recommend this place at all. I can get better steak and salmon at Longhorn for a lot cheaper. Needless to say we want be going back!
