Review of Five and Ten

Five and Ten: Upscale Southern Cuisine with French Influences

If you're looking for an upscale dining experience that offers creative and contemporary Southern cooking, Five and Ten is the perfect spot for you. Located in the Five Points neighborhood in Athens, Georgia, this James Beard Award-winning restaurant is built out of a century-old house designed by famed Athens architect Fred Orr. The restaurant is known for its gourmet farm-to-table menu, extensive fine wine list, and authentic service. The cuisine is elevated Southern with French influences, making for a unique and delicious dining experience.

The menu changes regularly, offering a variety of unique and tasty dishes. Some of the highlights include the carpaccio, chilled pea soup, cornbread, and rose petal cake. The pork belly and fried catfish are also excellent choices. If you're a fan of risotto, be sure to try theirs, as it's one of the best in town. The restaurant also offers Sunday brunch and weekly burger nights.

The decor and ambiance are welcoming and relaxing, with an antique house vibe. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the service is top-notch. The restaurant can readily accommodate dietary restrictions, making it a great choice for those with food allergies or special diets.

While the prices are on the higher side, the quality of the food and service justifies the cost. The restaurant charges an additional service fee to help offset the hourly wage paid to their servers, which may be off-putting to some customers. However, the fee is explained upfront, and the restaurant is transparent about its pricing policies.

If you're looking for a fantastic dining experience in Athens, Five and Ten is a must-visit. The restaurant is sometimes overlooked but is truly one of the best in town. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a delicious meal, Five and Ten is sure to impress.

Absolutely amazing experience! For fine dining I highly recommend this restaurant. Took my wife there for her birthday, (leap year girl, she’s 14, ha ha). As soon as we walked in, the staff were very friendly. Our server, Bob, was absolutely amazing. The perfect balance of attention and knowledge. So much to rave about, I couldn’t possibly fit it all in a review. The decor was really interesting! Our server even explained about these amazing plates they use that were obtained from the US Navy. As a nautical history buff, I loved it! I’ll attach a picture. The food was absolutely wonderful! Great presentation, great flavor. A perfect balance that was flavorful but not overwhelming. The drinks and drink selection were worth returning for! And the desert; well let’s just say you better leave room for desert! We sat in the outdoor dining area and loved the heated porch. And the prices are very reasonable for the amazing cuisine and service. There was another couple near us that had a leap year birthday. We decided to treat them and we paid for their entrees. Even with their meals added to our check, we were still pleased with the price! So in closing of this very long review, you absolutely must experience this restaurant. I promise you’ll be pleased and Will want to return. As a respected local business owner and an awarded google review contributor, I wouldn’t stear you wrong.

Fantastic restaurant. One of the best in Athens. The menu is not expansive, but there is something for everyone and everything is extraordinary. And they can readily accommodate dietary restrictions. The service is top notch - attentive but not intrusive. Great wine menu and cocktail bar.

Forgot to snap photos of the food before we enjoyed it all! Got to have the bread basket cause it was just delicious from the start. The fish was a great choice with a corn succotash. Desert we ordered one of each and it was to die for. The chocolate cake was the highlight!

We celebrated my husband’s 40th birthday and had a fabulous time. The food was amazing! Big thanks to Hank for helping me with my reservation!

Everything was phenomenal; our waiter (didn’t catch his name but he had strawberry blonde hair and a mustache lol) was outstanding - personal, attentive, and helped us have a wonderful Valentine’s day experience!!! We got the risotto, beef tenderloin, scallops and pavlova dessert and it was all spectacular. As a girl with a huge sweet tooth that pavlova was especially exceptional - honestly the most elegant, bright, and scrumptious dessert I’ve ever had!! Thank you so much for a wonderful experience!

It was okay. Very cool ambience and really good cocktails! The pimento cheese with bacon jam and the dessert were really tasty. The rest was pretty average.

If you have a normal palate with no food allergies and enjoy leaving a restaurant hungry, then go to Five and Ten. Tonight was my third experience at this restaurant and I wanted to say good things since this is a popular spot. But,alas, I must tell the truth. The bar area is delightful but having an actual meal is not delightful. The menu is limited and does not accommodate food allergies of any kind. I will not be returning.

Mixed reviews: Good food & drink, horrible pricing policies. Let me explain. First, the food and drink was very, very good - no debate here. The bad: They are charging top dollar for everything, food and drinks. They have the right to do that. What really bothered me is that on top of them pricing everything at top dollar prices, they charged an additional “Service Fee” of another nearly $8.00. When I asked for an explanation of this fee, it was explained to me as a charge to help “offset” the hourly wage the restaurant pays their servers. WHAT?? The customers are expected to pay the hourly wage of their servers PLUS a 20% tip??? I have never seen this anywhere before. For a party of 4 with 6 cocktails between the 4 of us, dinner and a single desert we all shared - nothing extravagant, our bill was over $400.00. And the “Service Fee” just seemed wrong & felt inappropriate and onerous for their customers, esp given the prices on their menu.

Wait service was very sweet and attentive. I enjoyed the antique house vibe. The food was just not well prepared or flavored. If the price point were more reasonable, it wouldn't have been so disappointing. It just seemed the kitchen staff was rushed as our entrees were undercooked and when a second order came out, it was sent out exactly the same and had to be comped. I'm guessing it was an off night for them, given the other great reviews. I've always heard great things. The celeriac soup was on point and we had many check-ins from the wait staff who did a great job.

Decided to try them for a nice evening get together and was actually blown away. The decor and ambiance was extremely welcoming and relaxing, menu is very diverse and seemed fairly priced for the offerings that had (will touch on this again), our server Teresa was amazing, knowledgeable on menu and drinks and then everything started to come out. Simply WOW !!!!! I was blown away with the quality of product and execution. From the freshness of the bread to the Serrano Ham and even the Mushroom Risotto; I am stunned that the menu is under priced based on the products they are putting out. Teresa was spot on with her recommendation with the drinks to perfectly match what we were looking for.
