Good coffee, friendly staff. Nice lighting which makes it a good place to relax.
People in Alaska seem to have their own version of “island time” so don’t be expecting things to get done fast.
Just chill

Great food. They have a wine list (seemingly rare in Alaska) and the food was served quickly. We came in with my elderly father and they told us that if we wanted waited on we'd have to go upstairs, which was unfortunate as he has fallen on stairs before. But we helped him up and the wait staff was friendly and the food was good. After touring the town and finding many places too busy, Mermaid Grotto was a great option.

Salmon toast and musubi was good! The service could be better overall. I got coffee the next day and it was just okay. Not many kid friendly food options, just a heads up for parents.

This place was adorable! The inside is modern and cute and they have very friendly staff. It is mostly a coffee shop, so there is a limited menu for breakfast, but it has a nice coffee list and delicious coffee. Though a limited selection, the food was solid and was the perfect way to cap off our trip in Seward!

The food here is so incredible it beats my favorite restaurant in my own hometown. The food here is such high quality, we were debating whether to try anything else on our vacation and just eat here every day. Also, the entire place looks like a work of art in itself. The mechanical giant octopus crawling onto the bar, the lights, the expensive mermaid statues in lounging areas. The art was so impressive my man commented how cool and amazing that part of it was, so its not just "girly" at all. There were things my man just stopped and stared at and took pictures of. If you are a local or on vacation, you have to go here. This is not simply a girly asthetic, the food made us not want to try any other place on our trip. We were literally here 5 days. I'm just shocked that Mermaid Grotto is actually better than any restaurant at home. My steak was better than New York Prime....does that tell you anything? 💕 If Mermaid grotto wants to make a franchise, hit up Myrtle Beach for me, because this really did beat the restaurants at home. If you can tell, I'm a bit shocked that the best food I've ever had in my life was in Seward Alaska. I knew it was going to be good.....but I didn't expect the food to be THAT good to where it's the best I've ever tried. It was just the pairing of everything too was perfect.

Excellent all the way around: service/staff, food, wait time and decor. Very enjoyable dining experience. Unique gift shop. Definitely recommend!

I had the Brenda and it was the best breakfast sandwich ever! Lots of well-done bacon and the fried egg, cheese and bun were delicious. The cost doesn't compare with McD's but the size and superb taste are unmatched! Staff was also friendly.

I hate saying anything bad about a local business, but sadly I didn’t have a great experience with The Mermaid Grotto yesterday.

First, as a general thing, the food was fine (I had a soup, and my husband had the fish sandwich) but not worth the cost. I live in the area and know that everything costs more here, but the pricing at this restaurant is comparable to other Alaskan restaurants that are farm-to-table and a little higher quality. It’s not exorbitantly overpriced or anything, just higher than I think it’s worth (I’m guessing it’s priced high because of the location/convenience of the restaurant).
The second reason for my somewhat negative experience is that the wait staff was not very friendly. I understand that it can be stressful to work in a busy restaurant (especially with the current staffing shortages), but I’ve never felt like a burden for ordering food at any other restaurant around here this summer. I felt bad for ordering food, like I was making someone work more than they were wanting to work. It was weird.

Anyway, the food is good, location is convenient, and they’re open on Mondays when most of the other restaurants in Seward are closed. So I wouldn’t dissuade someone from going there, but if you’re considering it along with some other places, check out the other places.

The owner of this establishment was amazing!!! A group of us flew in for a fishing trip and she had an abundance of information to share with us. The energy level and just over all enthusiasm that she put into everything made the experience that much better. The food was also ridiculously good and very reasonably priced. I would and will recommend everyone visiting this town to go here, grab a bite to eat and meet the owner for all sorts of tips.
