I did a little research as a weekend get away for myself and the wife to spend some time away.
For $25 each we were able to spend as much time on the gardens as we wanted and the tickets included going to the Great River Road Museum. There is no veterans discount but the ticket prices were reasonable.
Best to get there early to get a good spot for parking. Bring water and snacks especially during the summer months. Yes make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
The grounds are awesome to walk and most of the buildings are still intact with the Turtle Bar located in one of what looks like a gatehouse.
With three restaurants located on the property you do have choice of what to eat. We ate at Latils Landing which was located in the same building that the River Road Museum is located. The food was priced well unlike some other places that depend on tourists. The food was tasty and filling.
I would definitely be coming back when it is a little cooler to enjoy the vast expanse of gardens on the property.

Had an opportunity to stop overnite and stay in A-2. The room was beautifully laid out with antique furnishes and amenities. Rocking chairs for the porch provided a nice evening place for a romantic sunset. Couldn't find the ice maker... After doing the mansion and museum tour we also toured the expansive gardens. So many beautiful nooks to hide away in and relax. The dragonflies were aplenty as well as butterflies and the wayward rooster who dazzled us with his beautiful strut. The huge museum is a class act all in itself filled with everything you could imagine including carriages, boat models and everything "plantation". The Carriage House for dinner is a must with all the chef's created meals and award winning tastes for the palate. Dessert was just as great! Try the bread pudding...wow!

Had a fabulous time visiting this historic plantation house and enjoyed a wonderful meal at the carriage house restaurant. We actually stayed here in our RV as harvest host members (if you know, you know) and I highly recommend doing that. Naomi at the gift shop checked us in and made dinner and tour reservations, she was so gracious. Matthew was our tour guide and very knowledgeable. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

We do not understand the great reviews and we felt it was extremely overpriced. Maybe it was our expectations though.

Not being from the south or knowing much about plantations, we expected to hear about that on our tour. Nope. Only got the history of the house’s past and present owners and some info on household furnishings and what the rooms were for. Had to ask a bunch of questions, which our tour guide easily answered, so it wasn’t like he didn’t know. Yet when we did ask about the slavery times, we were brushed off. It happened, it’s history, we don’t have to cover it up - that’s more disrespectful than talking about it.

We were also taken aback to get turned out of the house from the old kitchen and into the gardens with basically an abrupt “that’s all folks” type of send off. We had no idea about any of the outbuildings, their prior uses, etc, which would have been interesting to hear about.

It was also weird to see the gardens in better shape than the house itself, when you looked closely, especially considering it is technically a private residence. We understand there are rules to follow with historical societies but still, not as well kept up as we expected.

The grounds and gardens are quite amazing - very picturesque.

We really wished we had taken our time and money and done one of the other plantation tours in the area that gave a more historical perspective, but we could only afford one, due to the astronomical gas prices these days.

NOTE: Apparently the museum next door goes into slavery and plantation life but since it was called a “maritime museum” and we weren’t interested in that subject matter, we did not go in. Plus, we wouldn’t have been willing to pay another $20 per person to see it.

Bottom line, extremely over priced for what we experienced.

Both the Houmas House and the gardens around it were beautiful. The house tour was excellent (thank you Patrick!), with lots of interesting history and artifacts. The gardens were teeming with birds, both domestic and wild, that brought them to life. A wonderful place to spend a couple hours!

We are not usually fans of tours of interiors. Our guide, Darren, really made this one so enjoyable. He was just a fountain of information and anecdotes, and appeared to genuinely enjoy his job, and not just recite what he’d memorized like so many guides do.
The gardens were beautiful, even this late in the year. Black swans and goofy white ducks with poufs on their heads added to the pastoral ambience.
Highly recommend!

Houmas House is truly an amazing place to visit. We got married there this past Saturday but we have loved it before the big day. We have come here since 2005 and I’m very impressed with the staff and the owner (Kevin) on how he keeps the place so clean and beautiful at all times. Rain or shine Houmas house will never disappoint you! Janine the wedding coordinator and a one woman show is truly amazing. She has gone above and beyond to make the wedding perfect. The chef Jeremy is absolutely amazing hands down! And Chad the Landscapper is an artist with his landscaping. The rooms are clean and you feel like royalty. They treat their guests with kindness and respect.
