A great spin on southern comfort food. The portion sizes are perfect…not too big to finish at the restaurant but you definitely won’t leave hungry. The hot-dipped chicken has great flavor and isn’t over-powering, but it can be complimented with a homemade ranch to tame the spice for those who are sensitive to spicy foods. The sides are excellent too; I’d recommend the green beans with potatoes. The closed-in front porch provides a nice ambiance and the place offers nice craft beers and a better-than-most wine selection by the glass.

We stopped in after a Campus tour and they accommodated us without a reservation. They were so nice. We all had beverages while we waited for a table. They had a great selection of Alcohol Free drinks to enjoy. A wine list too. The food was amazing. Fried green tomatoes with peach sage drizzle, potato cakes with pimento cheese-Fabulous. We will be back next time we are in town.

We sat in the first dining room, so it was a little cold. The food was amazing. It tasted like food style cooking and was very filling. I love their desserts as well

Service was very good, it was mid evening on a Thursday, so not very busy. We ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. We all ordered fried chicken with assorted sides. The chicken breast was ok. It was a little dry, but the batter it was in was crunchy and tasteful. The rice and gravy was unremarkable. Mac and cheese, good but didn’t stand out. Collards were tender. The green beans and potatoes were unremarkable. I’m from Louisiana/Texas, my wife, Southern Alabama. I understand southern comfort food.
For the price we paid for three to have a fried chicken breast, ( no choice offered, only breast) and unremarkable sides, I’m not certain I’d categorize this as ‘southern comfort food’. Perhaps we’ll stop by again and try another dish.

Wow, I used to come here all the time in college from when it opened to 2013.

The soul food at this restaurant is simply divine. The fried chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a perfect blend of spices that make it irresistible.
The macaroni and cheese is creamy and decadent, with a gooey melted cheese that melts in your mouth. And let's not forget the collard greens, simmered to perfection with just the right amount of smoky flavor and tender texture.
Each bite transports you to a place of comfort and nostalgia, and the flavors linger long after the meal is over. This is soul food at its finest.

It’s amazing this place is still open and looking forward to revisiting during my next visit in the near future.

My family and I had dinner here for the first time. The ambiance was perfect, it felt like we had a private chef at home cooking for us! 💝

We really loved a lot of the dishes! Favorite: Fried chicken was perfect 🤩, Tomato 🍅 pie we were like omg what is this? 😍, Mash pots with gravy 🥔 were on another level 😋 , Biscuits were the best we ever had and the salad 🥗 🍅 🥗 was super fresh loved the lemon tyme dressing. 😋

We are definitely coming back when we are in Boone 🤗

Just a little suggestion: Step up on the desserts 🍨 🥧

Proper is perhaps the single best dining experience in the high country of North Carolina. The staff is knowledgeable, but most of all they are kind and welcoming. The food is on par with the best restaurants in the county. I love this place, and cannot recommend it enough.

This is an awesome restaurant and location. The setting is very quaint, southern, and proper. It is essential posh or high end southern comfort food. The restaurant is in what looks a sizeable old home. Pet friendly with an aesthetically pleasing seating area that definitely fits the vibe/style of the restaurant. Food is amazing, plus the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Quality food and service at a price you won't be mad at. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone in the area, tourists or locals!

This place is a must visit. Quaint setting in the oldest building in Boone which was the old jail. Chill vibe and great ambiance. Everything is made from scratch and you can taste the passion!! Fried green tomatoes were the bomb for an app. I had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes. The mashed were better than my wife's and even she had to admit it! Took home the peach cobbler which made for an awesome breakfast. I would visit Boone again just to dine here.

Incredible food with a wonderful home cooked and low key “mama’s kitchen” vibe. Do yourself a favor and get the potato cakes! They are off the charts.
