Review of Sump Coffee
Sump Coffee is a popular coffee shop located at 3700 S Jefferson Ave, St. Louis, Missouri. This coffeehouse offers a unique and alternative vibe, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The interior is adorned with lots of reclaimed-wood accents, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
One of the standout features of Sump Coffee is their commitment to quality. They are known for being one of the best roasters in the Midwest, if not the entire country. Their house espresso blend is highly praised for its perfect balance of acidity, fruitiness, and floral notes. Whether you prefer to enjoy it on its own or with steamed milk, you won't be disappointed.
The skilled baristas at Sump Coffee craft incredible drinks. Every shot pulled here is perfection, and the milk is always impeccably textured. Many customers claim that Sump Coffee serves the best cortado they've ever had. If you're feeling adventurous, their specialty beverages are always interesting and worth a try.
Sump Coffee is not just a place to grab a great cup of coffee, but also a place to relax and enjoy the ambiance. The interior is hip and stylish, with a unique decor that incorporates wood elements. There is plenty of seating available both inside and outside at tables.
One thing to note is that Sump Coffee has limited operating hours. They are open from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday to Sunday. Some customers have mentioned that they wish the shop stayed open later, but the quality of the coffee and the friendly service more than make up for it.
If you're a coffee lover in St. Louis, Sump Coffee is a must-visit. Whether you're looking for a delicious espresso, a perfectly crafted pour-over, or a specialty beverage, you'll find it here. The combination of their alternative vibe, reclaimed-wood accents, and exceptional coffee make Sump Coffee a standout in the local coffee scene.

TLDR: Yes, yes, yes. Great cappuccino and really delicious apple gouda scone.
I was skeptical of the apple gouda scone, but it was so intriguing I just could ‘t pass by without having a taste. Did not disappoint. It was incredibly flakey inside and crunchy on top. It could have been deep fried for all I know. A slightly sticky and sweet drizzle made it quite good.
The cappuccino was delightful and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

The vibes in here were really cool! The coffee was delicious. Even if the coffee absolutely sucked (which it doesn’t), the atmosphere makes up for it. It is in a part of town with beautiful historic houses and feels almost as if you’re walking into a cafe in Paris. My only complaint is that the staff was very unfriendly and that kind of ruined the experience for me.

Sump Ethiopia Guji is legit *the best* coffee I've ever had. Ever. ❤️
Love the vibe at this supercool building that reminds me of a little Tudor-esque house.
Superfriendly staff.
It's an absolute daily must-do whenever I'm in St. Louis.

There is no shortage of top-notch third wave coffee shops in the St. Louis metro area, but this one tops them all. This is one of the best roasters in the Midwest, if not the country. I’ve only explored their house espresso blend, but it is absolutely amazing, with absolutely the perfect balance of acidity, fruitiness, and floral notes to drink on its own or to punch through a little bit of steamed milk.
The drinks crafted at the coffee bar are incredible. Every shot I’ve ever had a barista pull here has been perfection, and the milk is always impeccably textured. I think this may very well be the best cortado on the planet. And while it is almost a travesty to cover up the flavor of the coffee with anything else, the specialty beverages are always interesting and worth a try.
Always my go-to shop when I’m in STL—it’s hard to stop myself at three beverages here and not walk out with a suitcase full of beans!

A new favorite! Can’t believe I haven’t tried this coffee shop before.
I got the chocolate lavender coffee, which was delicious. I also got some tasty banana chocolate cookies, which come in a 4-pack.
Love the vibe inside, and there’s plenty of seating outside at tables. Will definitely be back!
Update 3/31/23:
Still one of my favorites in Stl! Love the new Tagalong coffee. Sadly the Ethiopian beans I bought from here recently were too hard for my burr grinder and jammed it. Still love the coffee shop though!

First off,I understand that coffee is a wildly subjective topic and it can get very complex, with that said I was disappointed with me 2nd experience with buying Sump whole beans (melting darkness roast).I purchased these same beans about 2 yrs ago and liked them enough so I figured I'd try them again since I ran out of my usual beans plus I like to support local whenever able..This time around the beans seemed vastly different. The roast appeared much lighter than before, which I'm aware that Sump roasts on the lighter end of the spectrum so I wasn't expecting some charred Starbucks like roast, especially since I've purchased this same roast in the past. There was also a lot of chaff and drastic inconsistencies in the bean size and color.I have a relatively expensive and good quality home grinder (flat burr) and I maxed out the fineness on my grinder and it still wasn't fine enough to dial this bean in.I have a step less adjustment grinder and have never had this problem with any other bean before.I can't explain what the issue is this time..

Amazing coffee, freshly roasted a few steps away and brewed with great attention to detail. There is a constantly varied selection of great coffee and some surprising cold brewed drinks (like the Cold Fashioned). It is a great study/work space, never too loud. When I moved back to STL after 8 years in Austin I despaired of finding a great coffee shop, but I found coffee equal to anything Austin had to offer at Sump. Please don't go expecting a Starbucks type drink. No blenders, no whipped cream, no 20oz cups. Intense flavors in classic drinks served in reasonable sizes (you know, like the size of a coffee cup).

Amazing coffee. They have good staff in a hip environment. They roast their own coffee and usually have a selection of multiple coffees they have roasted in store to buy or order. They also offer speciality drinks with coffee or tea. Also they have a small bite to eat but it’s quality is limited. Great please for a great cup of coffee or espresso.
