After many great experiences last night fell way short. This was my first time back since Covid started and Mas re-opened and the experience was truly disappointing 😞. I don’t want to knit pick but it was the food that fell way short not the service. Also availability of menu items under the bebitas menu were scant and also disappointing. Won’t be back for awhile even if it’s the only Spanish tapas place around.
This is my first tapas experience and it definitely made me want to go to more places like this. All of the food we had was extremely delicious and well timed so that we always had food in front of us after finishing a dish. Many options for different price points and dietary restrictions.
No problem getting a table outside. Waitress was helpful in explaining how everything worked and had some very good suggestions. We had 4-5 tapas. They were all delicious. My favorite was the Cauliflower and the Grilled Octopus. The least favorite was the Carne Asada.
Food was great. Perfect for a date night or small group of friends. You may have to wait for a table. Ordering was a little intimidating since there are so many options. We shared 8 tapas plates between 4 people and were very happy - definitely a light dinner though.
I've been to MAS around 10 times and the food is great. For some reason, the service has always been questionable. I find, when making a request, many of the servers there act like they are doing me a favor rather than being a server and getting paid to serve. Last night specifically, the kitchen totally forgot about our shrimp tapas and then we mentioned to our server. She went to check on it and 10-15 minutes later (after it was already 20 minutes late), she brought us partially slimy, uncooked shrimp. I took one bite and was disgusted. I mentioned it to our server and she said "I'll see what I can do, maybe they can put it back on the grill for you." She acted like we were incorrect and inconveniencing her to do her job. No apology and they have never offered to remove anything from a bill. Because of this server, who is a veteran and we've had her before, I will not be going back to MAS.
Just like being in Spain but without the Mediterranean. Everything is top notch! Save room for chocolate mousse. I'm addicted to their potatoes bravas. Our waitress was super! Get here early, especially on weekends. The line behind up to half an hour before opening.
I hate to write reviews. That being said, we had such an unpleasant experience I felt it was needed. Four of my friends and myself visited about a month ago. We got there early and stood in the rain as we knew MAS does not take reservations. We were seated at a very small table and asked if we could be moved. We were moved to a table next to the storage room, which housed open garbage buckets, we knew this as the door was open. We saw a table that seated six away from that and asked to be moved there. We were told no in case a party of six came in. So it would appear the customers who have waited and are willing to spend their money mean less that those who may come in. We tried to sit at the garbage table but the smell was really horrible. My friend asked to speak to the manager as we were not happy at which point we were told that we could leave. Mind you we are all in our fifties and were polite at all times. We agreed to go back to the small table and squeeze in a party of five for a table of three at best, if you live in C'ville you know how difficult it is to get into a place on a Friday night. The food was delicious and the service we received from a delightful young woman was wonderful. We will not return as three out of five of us own our own businesses in Charlottesville and would never dream of treating our customers with such disrespect.
Wonderful atmosphere and incredible food in a cool hole-in-the-wall location in Belmont. Lots of vegan/vegetarian options. Our server was knowledgable and staggered our tapas perfectly for a nice evening of fun food pairings and cocktails.
I have to agree with many of the mixed reviews. The owner's aesthetics are great. I've been there at times when the food was very good and other times when it was actually quite horrible...some of the dishes seemed hurried, not quite fresh, or even cold by the time they get to your table. I've also found a few of the wait staff to be a bit snotty. I guess it may make a difference to go at non- crowded times.
The worst “dining” experience I’ve ever had. Showed up 10 minutes early, only to find out that our reservation had been cancelled, but neither one of us ever cancelled it! Instead of finding a way to accommodate us, they told us there was nothing they could do. We couldn’t stand inside while we called an Uber, we had to wait outside in cold. No confirmation email about a cancellation was ever sent. I can only assume a regular or larger party called, and they cancelled our reservation solely for their financial gain. Had heard nothing but good things about this place, but their customer service is absolutely unacceptable. Will actively encourage anyone I speak to to avoid this absolute s***hole.
