Mas

Had a great dinner at Mas Tapas last night. All the dishes we tasted were delicious! I especially liked the lamb and beef burger. The service was friendly and efficient and the portions are generous. This was our first time, but we definitely plan to return.

Dined-In on a Friday night few weeks ago and customer service wasn’t great.
Service: it wasn’t really great. Our server was nice and friendly and made some recommendations on which plates are the best and most ordered. He seemed busy and forgot to bring us more water. This is understandable. We flagged down one of the bartenders as he was passing down and also forgot about it. We also flagged another server who looked at us, told us to wait, left and when she came back she completely ignored us. At the bartender passed by again and looked at us and brought us the water
Food: The plates we got were tasty but few of them were very salty, which made our need for water even more apparent. For the plates that were not salty, the flavor was outstanding
Prices: This restaurant is priced as a fine dining restaurant, which would be reasonable if few plates were not salty and the service was subpar that night.
Overall Value: it was a good night overall, will give it another chance as it was a really busy night and the servers/bartenders may have gotten a little behind.

This place was phenomenal. Great service. Great food, delicious cocktails. Will definitely be back.

Everything we ordered was delicious. The smoked tomatoes were our favorite. I asked the bartender for a really good red wine and it was perfect. We will definitely be back!

We had the mushroom risotto, the clams, some egg/dough thing in really thin layers. I forget what the names were on the menu...but the food was AMAZING. We also had amazing seasonal cocktails, Mas has the rare quality of elevating cocktails to be special and interesting as opposed to "just" using fancy ingredients.

If I could leave less than one star I would. We arrived at 8:20pM on a Saturday evening with a party of 7. We asked if we could be seated for a drink. There were multiple tables open. We were told that we could not be seated, nor could we stand at the bar. We were also willing to take our drink outside to sit on the patio but was told that also was not an option. The staff were unfriendly and confrontational. Our party have dinned at Mas hundreds of times in the past 20 years, but the change of managment in the last few years is the reason why so many tables are open at prime dining time on a Saturday night. There are plenty of other restaurants in Belmont that are welcoming and accommodating. I would suggest any of them over Mas.

Great atmosphere and food! The potatoes, chicken and rice, and mussels were to die for. We loved everything we ordered except the carne asada, it was bland and very tough for being cooked rare and the sangria was very watered down.The service was not the best we had to flag down a waitress to get anything. I would go back but skip a few things.

I’ve been to a thousand+ restaurants across the world and almost every restaurant in Charlottesville and I’ve never been treated like I was at Mas. I was there with 5 friends and within 5 minutes of us being there having a good time and talking and laughing an employee walked over to our table and said “you need to cut this out right now.” We thought he was joking at first. We were not being louder than usual. He said “I’m serious.” And stared at us hard. We were not being loud, we’d were not saying anything inappropriate, we were simply enjoying eachother’s company as one does at a restaurant and they basically told us “don’t say a word.” That’s not how I want to enjoy dinner, it’s not how I think any other customers want to enjoy dinner, and I would encourage any other customers to avoid this restaurant as they are simply unwilling to accommodate a group if the group is not one that will sit there quietly and eat their dinner. I have never given a restaurant a one star review but I can confidently say that this restaurant deserves the low review I’m giving based on the way they treated us.

My first in restaurant experience since the start of the pandemic. (I'm sure that seems crazy, but it is what it is.) I had a great time at Mas. All staff was masked (thank you!). We went early and had plenty of space between us and other guests. Server was nice and knowledgeable. Everything we ordered was enjoyable. No real "wow" experiences but no disappointments either.

My wife and I ate at Mas a few years back and very much enjoyed the food. I recently was in Charlottesville on my own and decided to have dinner again at Mas.

Service: Really not too happy about how I was received by the gentleman at the front of the restaurant. Just to set the scene, the restaurant has an outside patio, with only a few table not in use. Inside on the upper section, 2 out of the 6 tables were occupied, with the lower section only having 1 table occupied out 7-8. I announced to the restaurant team member that I was looking for a table for 1 person. He offered me the bar with full service, which I declined and said that I preferred a table. He then continued to look at his point of sale touchscreen for a minute and then disappeared to check that an available table was set. He returned and guided me to a table in the lower section, right at the back of the room next to the emergency exit and the AC blasting freezing cold air straight on this table. Now, I get it, on a busy night, you might need to save your four seat tables for the bigger parties. But I was there on Thursday night, I really don’t think it was fair to place me at the worst table in a 3/4 empty restaurant. When I left after my meal, there was only one table occupied in the upper section.
For the actual food & drink service of my meal, my waitress was very nice and attentive, no issues there.

Food & Drink: I had the Jamon y Queso (which was good and reasonably portioned) and the Queso y Alcachofa (which probably was a wrong selection by myself. I like all the ingredients, but for some reason didn’t expect it to me a form of artichoke dip). Overall the food was ok, but then it would be very hard to get a Jamon y Queso wrong. I enjoyed my cocktail Hemingway Daiquiri though, it was very tasty and it was served prompt & in an appealing manner.

Ambience: The place has a very modern, cool look, with different type of art on the walls around the restaurant.

I would come back again, but more for a drink at the bar then for a meal.
