I went here for a first date and it was crowded. We had a short wait before getting to our table. The menu contains a lot of Spanish, so I let my date (who was Hispanic) pick out our tapas. Everything was delicious, except for a hummus with a sneaky jalapeno oil. We shared about 6 tapas and felt full. The restaurant was a bit loud and very cozy, so we went for a walk to talk more. Perfect for a first date with the option to share or not and converse or people-watch.
Good food. Like really good food. But only go if you want to be treated like an enormous burden while paying upwards of 40$ a person. They have a really small staff, which normally justifies waiting an hour to be seated. Makes total sense. But when you’re finally seated and greeted by someone who has a preexisting problem with your existence, that’s pretty ridiculous. So I would give 4.5 stars for food - but the staff I’ve come into contact with (on my 4 past visits - I’m local) really takes the fun out of it.
I've eaten at Mas on three different occassion in the last 18 months. Each time I've been disappointed. The food is good, but not as great as I'd expected based on it's strong reviews. It gets quite loud in the downstairs room and feels crowded, too. The service is adequate, but the menu requires so much explanation that it is easy for a server to get tied up at a table helping people navigate their orders for long periods of time.
As a Mediterranean person, I am always underwhelmed by Mas. This is not good tapas. It is oily in an unnatural way. It is not okay to buy supermarket chorizo and put it on a plate and charge up the nose. It is not okay to bring 2 cups of hummus but only 2 slices of bread. It is not okay to dominate an elegant drink with excess juice or ginger. And it is not okay to serve it all with a cold, almost "too good for school" attitude.
I have been there more than I would have liked when I didn't want to be an a** upon getting an invitation but after every visit, I swear that I won't return. After this last time, I have to stick with my promise. I have to.
I have been here many times over the years and while there occasionally is a dish that we get I don’t particularly care for, some of the best meals I have ever had have been here. I love coming here with friends and visitors alike. I recommend the papas braves and obviously the bacon wrapped dates. You won’t be disappointed.
Mas is a wonderful culinary/social experience. Tapas are fabulous, atmosphere incredible and staff and service the best!!!! Sydney the host is adorable !!!! As is the rest of the staff!!! A must if you are eating out in c-ville!
I’ve personally been to Spain and this is my new favorite tapas restaurant in the whole world! With variations in price, quality of their food does not falter. The staff are accommodating and the kitchen staff can make any item of food into a fabulous gourmet ensemble that will transport you around the globe. As a non local I am incredibly jealous of anyone who lives within a 30 mile radius of this establishment. The wait was WELL worth it!
I don't usually rate restaurants but I feel it would be a disservice to everyone if I didn't post a warning. Waited an hour and thirty minutes for a table. Two other couples who came after us were given tables before us and when asked, the tall blonde waitress was rude. She told us and I quote 'don't worry about it'. I was so dumbfounded by her response that I just said okay and left to stand by the bar. When another couple were given a table, we went up again, this time to a different person. Explained that we had been waiting for a table and finally we were seated. We ordered total of four margaritas, the pork and cheese platter, the 3 yr age meat, grilled octopus, the sliders, and a special with lobster and rice. Where do I start? I was really hoping that food would make up for the terrible service. By terrible service I am not taking about the wait time. I'm taking about the way the whole situation was handled and the way the waitress responded to us. Going back to the food and drinks, the drinks were awesome. We had blood orange and pomegranate margaritas, two of each. The pork and cheese dish and the aged meat dishes are nothing to rave about. You are not missing anything. The sliders were good. Probably the only thing that was good. The "grilled" octopus came with some boiled then grilled potato steaks. octopus dish was soggy and tested nothing like it ever touched a grill. This was very disappointing as it was the one dish for which I sought out this restaurant. I've had grilled octopus in every restaurant I've visited if it was listed on the menu. The worst of all is the special of the night the lobster with rice. We ordered that dish because it came highly recommended by the waitress. I'm aware that specials are experimental dishes but what we got was overcooked rice with lobster, salt and soy sauce. The taste came close in taste to over salted, over priced chinese fried rice take out. We took one bite each and moved the plate to a corner. Soy sauce should not be anywhere near tapas. The waitress took the dish off our bill which was nice. But, she charged us extra money thinking we ordered more drinks than we had... So I circled the mistake and left a 20% tip which looking back was very generous given the mediocare food and then terrible service. So, to sum it up..
Pros- good drinks
Cons- terrible food and customer service
I would have gone back for drinks that's why I gave it two stars but I'll pass given everything else. "Don't worry about it" you're not missing much. Plus, they don't care about service or food. They only care about your money.
4 stars if U get there and it's not crowded, otherwise I would give it a lower rating for poor service, long wait time, and crowd.
Your experience at mas is best after the rush....8ish. The waiters are attentive to your needs. Mojitos were awesome. Nice atmosphere. Fun to order off the tapas menu. Food was more of a three. We really enjoyed the shrimp and sausage. You'll enjoy ur experience.
