Wonderful atmosphere. Great server! Kept glasses filled real well.
Had the lunch specials. I had the catfish...delicious!! Hubby has the chicken fried steak.... was okay.
Sides: awesome pinto beans and cornbread, waffle fries....didn't eat because not done enough, side salads good, coleslaw great, and chocolate cake okay.
We'll come back on our next trip.

Great little cafe right off the beaten path. Had an excellent cheeseburger, that had to be pressed down just to eat it, and waffle fries. Service was really good, my cup stayed filled and the waitress checked on me several times. The restaurant was clean and it was good to see the staff helping each other out. Will definitely be returning.

I have very fond memories of eating here with my dad in Stephenville. Founded in 1948 Jake and Dorothy's is one of those old time diners that serves up the best in classic Texas comfort foods. When you walk you feel like you have been transported to another era. It looks axactly the same as it did when I was a kid. If you find yourself here, do yourself a favor and order the chicken fried steak! It is simply the best. Go check them out

I love the old mom and pop cafe's. This one is no exception. Currently open just shy of 75 years. The counter and seats were a little worn, but not in a bad way, in a nostalgic reminder kind of way. I ordered a simple breakfast and was happy with it in every way. But even more impressive was the staff. We were served by our waitress as well as a couple others as they passed by. You just don't get this quality of food and service from a box franchise.

If your a town local this is probably a great place for you, but as for someone not from the area you are definitely treated as so. Our waitress said maybe three sentences to us while she was having other conversations with people across the restaurant. There was countless flies a guy was actually sitting there swatting them with a fly swatter! Also there was a roach that came out of the wall where a whole bunch of wires were coming out from. We had a simple order that took almost an hour to come out. People who came in after us were actually being served before us. Part of our order was over cooked. It was okay but I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

After all the good ratings, this was very disappointing. My husband simply gave it a "thumbs down" which is sad because he got the chicken fried steak special.
I had biscuits and gravy - and the biscuits were average. The white gravy was flavorless and gloopy, probably as tasty as wallpaper paste (not that I've eaten wallpaper paste). I ended up scraping the gravy off of my biscuits and using jelly instead.
The waffle cut potatoes (which they're famous for) definitely needed seasoning, although it WAS a huge portion.
The highlight was the carrot cake (that came with the lunch special). Very moist and flavorful, with good cream cheese frosting. The sweet tea was good too.
The service was friendly and our server checked on us frequently. However, the food just wasn't very good, so we won't be back.

The house coffee is bold and strong but not bitter, a must for a morning cup! The food is amazing and filling. The sausage was a little dry and the gravy was a little on the bland side. Everything taste really fresh and the staff is on top of taking care of their customers. I would say this is better than many restaurants back home in the dallas area. For a small town family restaurant, it is a definite must stop by and try!
P.S: they offer a XL chicken fried steak. They aren't kidding about the XL. Be hungry!

Tender and delicious chicken fried steak. Gravy was underneath steak which was different but good. Be advised they close when they feel like it, not 11pm like the closing hours state. I was happy with our visit when it came to the food. But I will say they for sure are in no rush and doing whatever they want in the meantime. Waitresses (young) having loud personal conversations behind the counter, shouting from across the room instead of just walking over to ask if they are out of item on menu. Noone wants to hear all that when trying to enjoy their meal.

Nice small town diner. The food was all excellent. My wife had a BLT, which she enjoyed, and I had the chicken fried steak, which was cooked perfectly.

I had chicken fried chicken, salad with ranch dressing and crinkle cut fries. The meal tasted fine and was exactly as you would expect. Fries were very greasy but unavoidable and were great. Cathy was very pleasant and friendly and very attentive to our condiment and beverage refills. I would definitely return here again.
