Coffee isn't the best but size wise probably the best value you can find downtown. I recommend this place for the space and seating. If you are going to meet up with someone or have a meeting downtown then this is definitely the place to go. Prepare yourself for completely random genres of music though.

Visited Ann Arbor a few weeks ago from London. Great city btw!
We decided to go to Espresso Royale for a quick coffee. We were a rather large group and ordered a few types of coffees. I'm afraid they were on the mediocre side or badly done at this moment in particular.
The worst part was the service: extremely rude guy (mid or late 20's, dark blonde hair, I think with glasses) "helped" us. He tossed the drinks all together and didn't want to tell us which one was which. Then, he just made it up! We asked for whipped cream and pointed bluntly to a nearby self service table to realize that was cream, not whipped cream. Then , we asked for whipped cream again and he put it on with disdain...
His attitude for the whole experience was pretty unbelievable :-D
Avoid! If they have that type of workers, something has to be wrong there.

The Espresso Royale on Main St. has a distinctly different vibe than the other locations. It seems quieter and more relaxed. The vibe fits the location and I think it's best for the people who would venture out to Main St. to visit Espresso Royale.

Been in dozens of times. The two consistencies are mediocre coffee and lousy service. Half the time I get "I'll be right with you" then wait four to five minutes before walking out without getting the chance to make a purchase. It's even worse when they have more than two people behind the counter! All I want is a to-go cup! I'd leave $2 on the counter and take the cup myself but, really, how far is self-service supposed to go?
If you want coffee, most time you'll be better off going to the Starbucks that is half a block away. Go a block and a half and you can get GOOD coffee.

This is the only place that I know of in Ann Arbor where I can order a latte and it will be consistently good, strong and hot. Not as well known as some of the other higher rated coffee shops, but 1 star above any of it's competition.

Was not disappointed; the Ginger Dragon tea was superb, the atmosphere is cozy and has distinct character, and friendly faces behind the counter. Can be a bit difficult to locate without help, but worth looking into.

My favorite coffee shop! Good coffee, and the best frozen coffee in town. Good atmosphere for meeting a friend or to spend a couple of hours working for a chance of scenery.

I'm a big fan of this Espresso Royale. Good selection and friendly staff as well as a very cozy environment. There's a number of couches and tables that make working / studying here a great option.

If you want to sit in peace, it's good place. Although not very nice that they vacuum clean still before closing.
Also it is cold there when A/C is on

Friendly. Good vibe. Great coffee. Works for getting a quick coffee drink or to hang out.
