This is my go to on those days I’m feeling like a fancy coffee beverage. But their regular coffee is amazing too. Everything they make is delicious and top quality. Grendel’s has been there forever and earned it’s place as a central east side staple. The owner is frequently working in the cafe and he’s one of the nicest guys I’ve met in Portland. Super friendly customer service. Great atmosphere. Well worth visiting when your in the area!!

I love this place! They are open earlier than anyone else nearby, the staff are so nice to me no matter who is working, and nice to the other customers who come in, too. And all the customers are in a good mood and said hello and good morning to me ❤️ I guess I am trying to day the happy morning vibes are great here. Also my food is always so delicious and inexpensive. This is my new morning spot!

Staff is always friendly. They even remember my order! Coffee is great, and if for some reason you do not like what you ordered they will make you something else without any attitude! Oh. The bagels and cream cheese are a daily thing for me. They're awesome! Menu prices are reasonable as well.

A great little cafe focusing on coffee and espresso drinks with a handful of tasty, simple breakfast & lunch foods to curb my appetite. Toasted bagel with cream cheese, hearty tuna melt, baked goods - it's exactly what I want it to be and a short walk from my work is the cherry on top.

I've been frequenting Grendel's since I started working in the area 6 years ago. They are a quirky little coffee shop with excellent soups made in-house. Their breakfast sandwiches are also delicious. And the coffee is excellent. I've had nearly everything on the menu and the baristas know how to pull quality shots. The owner Eric is friendly and will chat you up on occasion, and everyone who works there has become a friend over time. Definitely recommend as a meeting place, a place to grab a quick bite, or a place to work on your laptop or read.

I've been going to Grendel's for 6 years. They have been the most consistent thing in my life other than some friends, my immediate family, and the Internet (which is my home.)
Grendel's feels like home, too. And an office (I get my best work done here. They even have a printer.)
I've never patronized a place for 6 years straight - and they REMEBERED ME AFTER A YEAR when I got pushed out of Portland and managed to come back.
Very little employee turnover so you always have the same folks to come back to. The people are amazing, compassionate people who know their customers and provide excellent service to everyone.
Excellent selection. All of their coffee is great but my favorite is the honey lavender latte - they make the syrup in house. A lot of vegan options (something like 90% of their baked goods are vegan) and great sandwiches & soup.
I highly, highly recommend them.

The staff were very nice (especially considering I'm homeless and I sat there for ~4 hours) and the seasonal drink I purchased (Golden Milk Latte) was delicious. I also had a breakfast sandwich with egg, turkey, and pepper jack on an english muffin and it did not disappoint!
