South of the Border Cafe

What a great place!! It is where the locals go in a town filled with tourists (like me). The SOB Cafe is staffed with very hard working, extremely friendly people who cook up a great meal and serve it with a smile. Prices are good but come with cash as they do not take credit. They only serve breakfast and lunch, so we always try to plan in a stop for at least one meal during our once or twice a year visits to Grand Marais. In the slow season, it is not unusual for the wait staff to sit down with you for a bit and chat. You will also see the cook popping out of the kitchen to say hi to the regulars. It all adds up to a great location, fun, family meal. One thing I have noticed over the years is they seem to treat the tourists just as warmly as the regulars.

They do the basics very well. Clean restaurant with great views of the lake and pretty good people watching. I got the omelette with one pancake. It was great for American diner food. Lovely and chatty wait staff. If you make it up here be sure to pop in. Clean bathrooms too!

Fast, friendly service. Good omelet. Frequent coffee refills. This is the place for breakfast whenever I'm in town.

I have egg over easy, bacon and toast is was fantastic! My husband had i burger . . . Two paties, cheese and bacon it was good as well! Last yesterday he had their omelet and it was amaze! I tasted it and it was yummy : )

Wonderful place! Cute little diner, with amazingly friendly staff, and breakfast was fantastic! Our host was pleasant and kind and our waitress was hilarious and energetic!

Very delicious breakfast options and affordable. Our host offered great hospitality. Would definitely recommend!! Open earlier than competitors and that’s what brought us here. Definitely a plus that they open so early in the am. 11/10

Great food and atmosphere for this small town cafe in Grand Marias! Breakfast is fresh and hot with delicious coffee. I had the western omelet with homemade potato (hash browns) and pancake. It’s very filling and will tie you over until Dinner time.

Definitely worth the wait on a Saturday morning!

What a wonderful little spot to stop for a bite eat! It had hands down the best ham and cheese sandwich I have ever eaten. The fries were perfection and their homemade soup was spot on. So glad we stopped at South of the Border Cafe!

Locals eat here so you know it's good! Chicken noodle soup tasted like Mom's.

Staff was extremely friendly and polite!
Atmosphere was perfect!

We will be back when we return.
