We had Cacio E Pepe, (Cacio being cheese). The noodle texture and cook was exceptional, however there was no flavour, and no detectable cheese. We also couldn't taste the 'pickled truffle' that was in the dish on the menu. There was a lot of butter.

We had the beef tartare. It didn't seem freshly prepared, and had a texture like it had been cured with what tasted like vinegar or caper juice. There was plenty of beef, however the texture suffered from the curing, and the cooked egg yolk on the top (usually raw). The onion was diced a little too chunky for us, but this is down to preference.
Perhaps they used to prepare this fresh and were burned by poisoning someone, so now they cure and cook, but this isn't how it's supposed to be. Please learn to do it right safely, or stop doing it wrong.

Their meat and cheese platers were good, the meats thinly sliced, and tasty.

The service and staff attention was excellent, on par with the best places we've been.

The decor is nice.

When they asked at the end of the meal, I provided feedback on the food to the wait staff. They brought glasses of Prosecco to try to compensate for the food quality, however we just wanted to improve the quality, and weren't looking to drink more. Would have preferred to be asked what they could do than have it decided for us.

We celebrate my wife's birthday there. It was amazing how they helped us with all the process as we were 18 people and we reserved a big room just for us! Thanks to Natalina for being so helpful and the chef for the amazing food!

Edit summer 2022: Their $30 3 course lunch special is a great way to get a taste of Mediterranean deliciousness.

What a lovely experience! Complimentary mocktail, caccio peppe to die for, sea bass cooked to perfection and gelato on the house. What more can one ask for. Personal favorite beet carpaccio.

Food was not bad, but did not feel like it was worth the wait. Staff is a mixture of very friendly or nearly hostile, and probably won’t be coming back.

Bad service and rude staff especially the older waiter, they should be changed. They also try to charge you expensive things you didn’t order. Unacceptable.

I prefer eating outside (because of Covid), but inside is great too when it's glacial outside. The food is always great and always well presented. Service is impeccable.

I was blessed to have many memorable lunches and dinners at this establishment back in the late 80's early 90's with wonderful friends and family. Living in Connecticut and Florida my wife and I and then my new born would visit 4-6 times a year. Every meal was exquisite and made so much more as our family became close with George the owner. Each experience was filled with such great dining and happy evening's of love and laughter and lots of wine! This Thanksgiving weekend I was able to have the best déjà vu ever as I was in DC and was able to dine there once more! Natalina (George's beloved wife) was there to greet us and we had such a great kindling of memories and if course the best homemade egg noodle pasta with beef bolognese( to die for). We were treated to a dessert of goodies words cannot describe ( Thank you Natalina !) If you are fortunate to call DC your home make LaTomate a place where memories are made, if your like me make each time in the area a time to relive them and make new ones.

Superb. I hadn't been back here for nearly 4 years (thanks Covid!) and I truly thought this place had closed. I was overjoyed to discover that not only was Tomate still operating but still producing excellent food, well cooked and very delicious.

I was there with a group of about 20, so we had a fixed menu. The space was inviting, and the wait staff was attentive. The food was nice, and I specially like the beets - not a huge serving, which is appreciated and made me savor every bite. Worth finding and lingering - pretty cool old country vibe.
