Tasty, simple Portuguese offerings in Noe Valley, filling a space for a cuisine not found in SF. The atmosphere and decor are quite nice, and service is also satisfying. Starters are a bit more interesting than the main courses, and the ambiguity in heaviness makes it a bit hard to order, but overall flavors are great.

I am a first generation American, born and raised on a dairy farm and raised in the Portuguese culture. Portuguese was my first language. I grew up eating Portuguese food. So when I discovered Uma Casa and learned that the chef was from The Azores, I had to come in and dine. the menu offers traditional authentic Portuguese meals. I would try family style Bacalou.
I would have given a 5 star. Let me explain that I enjoyed this restaurant, the ambiance and their meals and wine. What upset me was the wines by the bottle was way over the top marked up. For example, the white wines are $40-60/bottle but if you buy them (i had mine specially ordered) each bottle was $8.95! Since the owner knew I was buying like 4 bottles, maybe he could have decreased the price. After all, we are pretty savvy these days having access to the internet to learn about products before we buy them.

So my only disappointment and what raised an eyebrow was how marked up in price per wines by the bottle. You can lose a customer over this- just sayin’.

Was expecting a bit more. Had the tasting menu... Starters were great beginning. The mains were disappointing... Particularly the fish of the day, which was dry, dry, dry, and the half chicken which was also drryyy (but nice fire grilled flavor so possibly forgivable?)

I love the ingredients and flavors in the dishes on Uma Casa's menu. Unfortunately, they were prepared poorly or combined with others to create harshly and strangely flavored dishes.
First, the fave beans tasted sour and green, as if they were poorly sourced and not cooked enough. I love cooking and eating fresh fava beans. I would never serve or eat what I had on my plates at Uma. Something went terribly wrong, and sadly the fava beans kept reappearing in dish after dish.
The shrimp turnover appetizers lacked almost all trace of even small fragments of shrimp, and instead contained a heavy yellow sauce.
The salt cod was the biggest disappointment. It tasted like it had been inadequately washed. That is fishy and way too salty.
We had 4 dishes total whose preparation and taste left us surprised and disappointed, one after the other. Flavors clashed with each other, creating a cullinary battle that extended from the plate into our mouths.
Service was OK, sometimes attentive, sometimes very hard to track down even with half the tables empty.
I grew up in a Portuguese American community, and cook Portuguese food at home. Based on what we ate, the Google rating of this restaurant makes no sense - it's grossly inflated. Our dinner was in one word, Bad.

Unique feel and food. Good ingredients, nice service, never seems to be a line either. Definitely a nice neighborhood spot to check out. Tasting menu (more like a prix fixe) seems fun too, though you need the whole table to go in on it.

I was there at a celebration dinner. The menu included bacalhau fritters, salad, Mozambique shrimp, a bacalhau casserole, and grilled chicken. It's a fairly casual place. The food is very good and gets 5 stars. The flip side is the parking. There are no parking at the restaurant. Only street parking of which there is none available.

I attended a special event last Sunday. Set menu: wine pairing: set price (includes tax and tip). This is the second such event I have attended. Entertainment included 2 outstanding "fadistas" from the bay area accompanied by 3 exceptional musicians.

Antelmo Faria has an exceptional ability to prepare and present Portuguese dishes. He elevates Portuguese cuisine to another level while maintaining those unmistakable and traditional Portuguese flavors. Salted codfish fritters and caldo verde soup are a must. The wine pairing was spot on and is indicative of a knowledgeable person with a sophisticated palate.

Wait staff is attentive, courteous and professional. There is definitely a comfortable vibe. Overall a very delightful experience.

Everything is so delicious! Famiy style sharing menu. Food arrives in thought out waves. All wines are Portuguese which I'm not familiar with but every one i had was delicious.

Mehhhhh, not sure why this has got such good ratings. It was just ok not huge amounts of flavor, nothing standout. Service was ok, but far from great. Bit over priced for not giving any wow factor. I would have given 3 stars, but unfortunately the Portuguese tart at the end of the meal was completely overcooked. If a Portuguese restaurant can't get a Portuguese tart right .......

This is a great neighborhood restaurant, friendly service and delicious food. We were often pretty wary of Portuguese cuisine but this place really changed that. We have been back there times since our last visit so that should say a lot! Worth a visit most definitely!
