I have a three tier system I rate my coffee places by:
1. Down & Dirty: Free coffee at work, or cheap coffee at a gas station. Low expectations set and met.
2. The Understudy: You're paying higher prices but not necessarily getting higher quality or a great cup of coffee (i.e. Scooters). You'll stop there in a pinch, but it's not really something you'd recommend to friends.
3. Achieving Nirvana: These people know and love coffee. This is the place you'll drive across town to, to get your coffee.
There are three, *maybe* four Nirvana coffee places in Omaha and of them, The Howling Hounds is my favorite. The staff and atmosphere have a chill vibe that make you hate to take your coffee to-go. Their drinks are full bodied, expertly prepared, made from ingredients thoughtfully acquired and stored. The location is slightly off the downtown beaten path- which means it's close to everywhere you'd like to go, but you'll never struggle to find parking.
Cheers!

Visiting from Kansas City and walked down from our hotel for morning coffee. A great place, delicious coffee, and fun vibe. Really down to earth atmosphere, and great conversation with owner as we enjoyed our drinks. Will be stopping in next time in town.

Has always treated me great it's like walking into the local barbershop! This man has his coffee knowledge down. First time I walked in I had the best French press of my life, made it feel light with the jarhead juice you need to get through the day! You can talk about anything from politics to your past relationships. Just walk in and ask for a Greg surprise!!! Support your local shops it's a must have on the Leavenworth district and the old market, truly incomparable in omaha!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not a coffee connoisseur but I do drink it most every day and I know when I'm drinking a great cup of coffee. Not too bitter while still rich in flavor. I'm from Lincoln but my fiancée and I stopped by Howlin' Hounds on a trip to Omaha this summer. We both had a cup of pourover coffee from a New York state coffee distributor (I can't remember the name). The coffee was so good. I thought it was one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had. The owner made us feel so welcome and he gladly explained everything about the coffee that we selected. He also made an interesting recommendation to me. I drink my coffee, typically, with cream. He mentioned that I might like to drink a sip of the coffee black before adding the cream in order to get a "baseline" for the flavor. I'm not sure but it seemed to be good advice and might've added to my enjoyment of the coffee. You can tell that this man takes pride in what he does. We just had a great time speaking with him and he really seems like a nice guy. If we're back in the area again we will surely stop by for a cup! Lastly, the atmosphere is awesome. It's inviting with a good bit of character. Nice wood floors and a great bar and interesting art hanging on the walls. I definitely recommend anyone in the area to try Howlin' Hounds!

This is by far my favorite coffee shop in Omaha! Howlin' Hounds is also the most unique coffee shop in the metro. The owner, Gregg, is a talented barista with wonderful service and creative menu options. Contemporary art fills the large space and is avaliable for purchase and one can even rent out the shop for parties and showcases as well. This place is a must!

I have never seen an actual coffee "bar" before and this place is super cool. Not to mention the guy behind the bar who also lives in the building was SUPER nice. He even recommended a park to take my kiddo to because we arent from the area. Coffee was great as well!

Visiting from Arkansas and had perhaps the single most pleasant experience I've ever had a coffee shop. Greg indulged our questions about his beans and took the time to chat. Will certainly be coming back.

A simple but good menu, this was a nice stop for coffee. What made the experience was the owners! Being from out of town, they were very friendly and offered multiple places to check out while in Omaha!
