Delicious coffee and drinks. Awesome, homemade food. Great place to look around, too, as there is a pottery showcase in the same building. You can also get yummy bread here from Salt of the Earth next door and local goat cheese from a creamer down the road. All in all a wonderful place to visit. Plus it's on the way to Lake Michigan so it makes a fun day trip.

This place immediately charmed us when we walked in. We loved all of the artwork and the quirky charm of this place. However, my food was entirely inedible and my wife’s food was so-so. I ordered a smoothie and it came very chunky- to the point that I couldn’t drink it up the straw. I brought it up and asked for a new, better blended smoothie. It was obvious that they took the smoothie I had been drinking, dumped some water in it, reblended it and gave it right back to me. AND it was still chunky. I ordered a salmon & egg waffle and the salmon and eggs were very dry and improperly heated (some spots hot & some cold). It seemed as if the food had been cooked days prior and nuked. I tried to (politely) return my food and reorder, but was given an attitude by the staff. I told them it is not acceptable to reblend a customer’s smoothie they have already drank from, and they insisted that’s what I had wanted. They told me my other choices of brunch were not stocked. I ended up asking for a refund and my morning was ruined.

A fantastic meal improved by seating interspersed throughout their art gallery. A truly unique experience bolstered by their friendly, helpful staff.

Cute coffee house attached to an art gallery. I had coffee and a piece of coffee cake--both really good. Saw families with kids and older couples enjoying the breakfast and lunch fare. Nice place to sit, chat and grab a quick bite.

Its very good. But we did have an order that didn't have any of the toast that was to come with it. I had the frittata but it was tasteless. Needed more seasoning.

Root was fantastic! The food and drink was spot on. My kiddo was having a really hard time with the presence of bees, one of the staff noticed and brought out a natural spray to try and ward them off. We didn't end up using it as the bees went away on their own, but just having it helped my kiddo cope a little better. Thanks Root staff!

Great food. It was a big apple picking, pumpkin patching day, so the kitchen honestly got a little overwhelmed... but some free cookies and great service from the staff went a long way.

Absolutely warm and wonderful small town coffeehouse! My first experience of this place was on a rainy day a few years ago, I’d just made MIchigan my full time home and as such I wasn’t fully aware of the hours or days of operation. It was pouring rain and I had a few hours to kill while waiting for my car to be serviced down the street so I ran with my head down and into Root and it wasn’t until I walked in that I realized they were closed. The owner was there cleaning or working on something and I was so embarrassed and apologized and she could not have been more kind or accommodating to me. She invited me in and she made a latte for me and let me sit there and drink it while she worked. I have been stopping there ever since and the food is down to earth good eats too! The soup bowls are the size of swimming pools it appears and there is nothing better on a winter day. Great coffee and chai served in artist made mugs; I forget to mention they sell local artist wares at Fernwood which is attached. I have bought a few oil paintings there from artists whose talent goes unmatched! Good home cooked meals and they now serve alcohol too!

I've never ate at a restaurant that has made me so happy I could cry! The beignets take me to Nola and the wonderful honey lavender latte takes me to Chicago 😍 all wonderful memories and everything is delicious and the atmosphere is beautiful! I cannot say how gorgeous the pottery is as well ugh just go now!!

I wish my Mom and I had eaten here earlier than our final day in Michigan because we would have ordered something for breakfast, lunch and dinner the entire vacation. Everything we ate and drank was amazing, including the house-made cranberry-raspberry jam that they NEED to sell in jars. I don't even like cranberry or raspberry jam but this combo was AMAZING with their house-made bread and PBJ and anything else you can put jam on I'm sure. HIGHLY recommend this establishment, as well as the potter who created the mugs and plates. Please support this artist and Root Cafe!
