Small intimate venue. Love seeing performances here

New York underground meets Charlottesville hometown vibe. This medium sized venue is excellent for catching everything from bluegrass to punk with up-and-coming travelling artists, before they return to play the Jefferson Theater a year or so later. Local shows are great here and the selection of beer has never disappointed.

The staff is small but very efficient, offering friendly and fast service. The food is relatively limited but they do have a decent variety of gourmet grilled cheeses and some various pub fare.

There are three bathrooms. The third is located in the music area which is sometimes overlooked by newcomers.

There's plenty of room out front for a smoke in between music sets and a coat area so you never get over heated or have to lug around your jacket.

10/10 - I love the Southern.

Good little venue. Intimate concert space and ample bar space. The sound was very well done for such a small space dominated by huge brick and stone piers holding the building above up. Probably wouldn't want to be down there in an earthquake.

Great atmosphere, excellent selection of local beers and a good menu. It hasn't been too crowded the times we've gone so you could stand as close to the stage as you wanted. They get some really good artists and you can get a much more personal experience than at the Jefferson.

Venue was pretty cool. Comedy game show (winstmas games) was great! Very funny! Beer is a bit over priced ($7/can for craft brews) but tickets to the show were cheap so it sorta balanced out. If google allowed half star ratings, I would have done 4.5 due to expensive beer but its a very cool and unique venue so deserving of 5 stars anyway.

This is my all time favorite concert venue. Every show is intimate without losing its energy. The location is great, as well. I've discovered many artists simply by showing up to random shows here. I've never regretted it.

Caught Peter Bradley Adams show here. Have seen his show at other venues throughout Va. Something bout the acoustics in small cavern area..made it one of the most personal entertaining evenings in maybe forever. Everyone was polite, meet & greet for drinks after show, i think we closed the place. But were never told we had to go. Not sure what happen to others ratings here? Maybe the attitude you recieve is same as one you give? treat people like humans they'll for most part treat you same.

The venue itself is small and intimate. The acoustics are decent, and the bar fair. The problem with the place is the crowd. People were talking throughout the entire concert. I asked some people to stop talking, and they said, "No, we're going to keep doing this the whole night". Pretty immature, IMO - and sadly, I think they're likely to be a regular problem. I probably won't go back unless there's some band I really want to see. If talkers don't bother you then by all means go, but I can't really recommend the place if you want to listen to music. I think that's a shame too because hate not being able to support local businesses.

I went with a friend to see a show, and did not know what to expect. I saw a world class show. Great beer, great food, great atmosphere. I'd gladly go again. Truly great experience. Everyone was having a blast.

Disclaimer! I'm biased because I work here! However I came to The Southern for years before I started working behind the bar. Featuring great shows of all genres (and comedy!) in a more intimate atmosphere, lots of local beer and cider selections, a new and expanding dinner menu (highly recommend the delicious flat bread pizza, especially the vegetarian masterpiece that is the Spyro G!), and rad quirky staff.
