Terrific coffee that they brew themselves, fabulous Wines By The Glass, great meeting place with good Wi-Fi.

Local frequent customer. Coffee is the best I’ve ever had - we now only buy Northern Grounds beans to brew at home! I really enjoy working upstairs in Society Hall Workspace, and meeting friends for wine or coffee and conversation downstairs. As both a user of the workspace and a customer of the coffee shop, I respect and appreciate the laptops upstairs policy. It’s clear they’ve worked hard to make the upstairs a welcoming and comfortable place to work and it frees up seating downstairs for those who are there for a quick bite or a coffee date. The atmosphere cannot be beat!
NOT A WORKSPACE. While traveling we had to complete some work and found a local coffee shop as that’s our go to. After purchasing the coffee we found out no computers are allowed on the main floor. The upstairs is marketed as a workspace but you have to pay extra for it for longer than an hour. It is also only open during the week until 5pm. Not only am I disappointed in the gimmick of marketing free wifi yet not allowing work, the coffee was just decent. Seems like a cool place to come and drink some wine, but it shouldn’t be a place to come get coffee imo.
Bit expensive but par for the course in ely mn. My kids loved the strawberry ans very berry smoothies. We also had a cake donut that was very tasty.
Best coffee shop in Northern Minnesota! Huge inviting space, a variety of good food (the breakfast burritos are excellent!) and friendly, attentive staff. Gets busy sometimes because everyone loves it!
Burritos were terrible and served cold, staff complaining about being busy. Take your appetite and money elsewhere.

Northern Grounds is an Ely treasure! I love the variety of food and beverage available, and so appreciate how the leadership of the business truly seeks to serve the community. The wine tasting events and Society Hall Workspace co-working facility are examples of how this business goes above and beyond to serve the community.
Pre-wrapped sandwiches and breakfast items are available. They have a few cocktails on "tap" - the Old Fashioned was outstanding.
Come here every year and always feel right at home!
I didn't expect this type of place in Ely, but I'm really happy to have stumbled upon it. Such a large inviting space with a lot of coffee options, pastries, sandwiches, and soup specials. The staff was super friendly and helpful as well. Seems to be a bar at night with tons of wine and beer on tap as well. A great place to hangout and relax.

Great place to unwind and enjoy a coffee, wine or beer. Cozy atmosphere and something for everyone! Enjoyed a blended caramel mocha.

Coffee was decent but the chicken wild rice soup was a 1 out of 10. Broth based soup that basically tasted like water with under cooked carrots, weird square chicken pieces and wild rice! Without a ton of salt it was inedible!! And at $7 for a smallish bowl it was easily the worst deal in town!

I stopped in for a great cup of coffee after leaving the Boundary Waters. I like good, black coffee. Northern Grounds did not disappoint on the coffee side. The service was below average, though. 3 employees continued their personal conversation while I stood at the register with my wallet in hand less than 5 feet from them. They ignored me until they were done with their meaningless conversation, then they provided indifferent service. If the service matched the product, this place would be 5 star.
I worked remote here for nearly a week. Best atmosphere, wonderful coffee, great internet connection. This place is a staple in Ely! Love our visits, can’t wait to get back for another iced Latte.
Great little coffee shop with pastries and sandwiches. Also serves wine and beer! A fair amount of seating, including some comfy chairs, plus clean bathrooms.
