Essex Ice Cream Cafe

My wife and I tried the eggplant pinwheel, Calzone and the caprese sandwich. All were excellent, I'm sort of upset I didn't get extra to take home. The clerk was very friendly and even gave us a free chocolate bar. Now yes, she did yell at a womam not wearing a face mask that was within six feet or her. That's not an indictment of her, there are signs all around her business and ya know, it's kind of a global pandemic. Be respectful, wear a mask, and enjoy some delicious food.

Thank goodness for the new management!! If you’re visiting from 2022- on, ignore the old reviews. I’ve been to this place under several owners and this is the best it has ever been.

I’ve been twice now for take-out, it’s such a good change of pace to have local reliable, fast, good take-away. Highly recommend.

Such poor customer service-lady that owns it shouldn’t EVER be working the main counter. We called before we went and they confirmed they were servicing ice cream Got there looked at the menu for 5 minutes. Went to place our order wanted to order ice cream and my daughter and I wanted some hot apple cider and the owner said oh no I can’t do any of that. I am by myself (middle of oct and it was literally a ghost town) Only baked goods. Then had the nerve to say about 6x I’m hiring if you know anyone. Rather than apologizing or answering why they said they were open when and servicing ice cream when I called prior. Glad she couldn’t fulfill our order, wouldn’t want to give it to such a rude person such as her! Don’t waste your time.

Rude and unfriendly. The guy near me was not wearing his COVID mask properly, so the woman owner refused both of us service. She was yelling through the glass window with her mask on. The older gentleman couldn’t hear so he leaned closer. She got angrier at his proximity and said he was within six feet and said he needed to go away. All I wanted was a muffin and a turnover to go.

I echo the other 1 star reviews saying that the rudeness of the service is a reason not to go here. Though I appreciate the business being open during COVID-19, that is not an excuse to be rude to people. The owner is obviously not comfortable with continuing to serve customers during this time. I was standing across the street and she opened her closed window and yelled at me to put a mask on. Saying the “particles were flying in her face”. I was not even standing on the sidewalk of her business. Maybe it’s time to close down for a bit instead of treating people rudely.

Echoing every other 1-star review. The lady running the shop is incredibly rude. Don’t waste your time or support the business. Started yelling at my father and I as we looked at the menu from outside on the sidewalk with our masks in hand. Who wants to be treated like this ever?

Fantastic baked goods, especially pies. The shop has a wide selection of excellent treats. Customer service can be brusque, as the owner is very sensitive to covid protocol, BUT great care is put into everything served- from the milkshakes, to coffee and the aforementioned pastries and pies. Don't listen to the haters on here.

Awful. Strange lady yelled at me saying she didn’t have propane so couldn’t sell sandwiches. I asked if she had Ice cream and she just yelled that she had nothing. I tried to offer this independent business some trade but I wouldn’t recommend and won’t go back again. Made me feel like a naughty child. Really strange bizarre lady.

Manager is horrible. My friends and I bought some coffee & art and sat outside at a table with a dog. Our little dog barked ONCE at someone walking by on the street and the owner kicked us out of our table (This place claims to be dog friendly)

Was just walking by with my boyfriend and some friends with no intention of stoping at this shop, the woman behind the counter (who was actively helping a customer) stopped what she was doing to yell at us to put our masks on and socially distance. She continued to talk about us as we walked past. Not sure what her problem is
