paper planes is probably one of the best coffee shops i've ever been to. staff is very friendly, the drinks are overall pretty good, and the place is cute and simple. their coffee is flavorful and not too sweet. the service is pretty slow, and that's why i rated them 4 stars. but it's definitely a great coffee shop and i would recommend it!

Updated: their new space is awesome, but the decision to not increase the number of espresso machines/staff or leave the old location operating in addition as a take-out only location (or use it to re-enable mobile ordering) means the lines are too long. Coffee is still great and their science menu still can’t be found anywhere else, but 20-30 minutes to wait on the weekends is too long for a cup of coffee (especially when some of that wait is going to be spent outside in the cold). Still a great place tho just be prepared to stick it out with a wait if you want to try it.

11/10 star review. Amazing, educated and friendly staff and owner. Always open to chatting about coffee and they even roast their own beans on site. Best part is.. they're dog friendly. Can't wait for them to open the bigger location but good things come to those who wait.

Fast friendly service. I'm not a coffee drinker but the matcha latte was decent. Would recommend a ceremonial grade. Love the little outside sitting area.
Update* came for the fall special- ube and match drink called Young Frank that we saw on Instagram. Wow!! So amazingly delicious and flavorful that we've already been back everyday this weekend. Would love if they sold this year round :)

The cutest coffee place. My boyfriend is an airline pilot and loved the plane schematics on the wall and the airline style seating.

Great coffee selection. Slow service perhaps it was poor timing. Nice variety of coffee/lattes

Nice, chic, modern coffee spot. Staffs are super friendly and actually looked happy to take your order. Lots of seating, I especially love the airplane seats and windows. They also have a variety of caffeinated drinks and even some clever concoctions like West Side Story - guava nectar, sweetened condensed milk and espresso.

After reading some of the other reviews, I felt compelled to contribute some thoughts. The comments about “cost”, should be eliminated immediately from this discussion. At Paper Planes you receive a substantial beverage that has been curated and made exclusively by coffee chefs. Recently, I reluctantly purchased a coffee from a big chain coffee shop and ordered a hot brown water (they called it coffee) that charged me an extra 2 dollars just for the dairy of my choice (Paper Planes never penalized you for your choice of dairy). At the end of my transaction, the cost of my coffee was significantly more than the cost a of Paper Planes coffee. I’m not sure how much some of these critics want to pay for a coffee, but in the New York metro area, one expects that a good cup will cost you $4-$6. If this is an issue, stay home and learn how to boil water. If you don’t appreciate the flavor, your taste buds clearly have not graduated to good taste.
Furthermore, Paper Planes has given a much needed destination for Montclair residents. There is a good reason why there is a constant fast moving line of coffee loving guests every time. The atmosphere, music, staff, and of course the coffee will bring me back weekly! A brilliant place to do your work, meet friends, or just silently sip.
10 stars!

Props and respect to the designer of this place. To be able to sit in an airplane seat and have your coffee? Way cool. And sit in a 60s/70s vibe chairs, spaciousnesses, and very loungey…..you can tell there was a lot of attention to details….even to the bathroom! Coffee? Oh yeah that. Well I had a very flavorful mocha and a huge tasty croissant. Can’t wait to try more. Hats off to the owner…..they definitely spent $$$& on the place. And a very nice friendly staff too!

This is my favorite coffee shop in Montclair. My usual is either the iced Voodoo or Mayan Latte. Both are excellent and have flavors that are very unique. If you’re looking for a typical, chain coffee shop with boring black coffee, this isn’t the spot. I apparently go at off peak hours bc it’s never too busy when I’m there but I’ve heard from friends that it’s near impossible to get a seat inside during the rush. For me, this is a grab and go spot.
