The most important aspect of an espresso stand is, well, the espresso. Black Fern has some of the best. Very smooth and mellow while still packing just enough of a punch. House-made syrups are unique and flavorful; the cardamon adds a lovely complimentary flavor without being overly sweet.
Service is less important, but can still make it break an experience. During our visit, the staff were busy and short-tempered, but that might not be the norm and would not prevent us from returning.
What might prohibit us is the cost. Espresso drinks are fairly expensive here (and the upcharge for plant-based milk makes them much more so). Other reviews mention that Black Fern employees earn a living wage, but that was not evident to us as customers.

A very nice location on the waterfront with plenty of outdoor seating. My coffee mocha with oat milk was delicious. Unfortunately the food menu was typed on a small piece of paper and very small type on the counter I could barely read it. Also they do not take cash it’s plastic cards only.

Amazing coffee & a great place to study! Great location, great service, and pretty quiet if you need to work :)

Great place for meet-ups. Before a lovely bay walk. Coffee and Solitaire.

Really great atmosphere. I'm not sure the type of coffee it's an acquired taste.

3 stars for the location and interior. I love the setting, being in the Granary Building and on the waterfront. It really is an awesome, top notch location and the inside has lots of potential as well with a modern vibe, good seating, and a nice industrial sort of look. Unfortunately the prices will keep me from coming back here. A 12 oz spicy mocha cost me an arm and a leg and other body parts! If I were to frequent this place like I normally do with coffee shops, I would have to say good bye to half of my life savings. I’m sorry, but $8.45 for a 12 ounce drink is WAY, way, waaay too much 😔Prices don’t seem to be advertised on the menu so it’s sort of a surprise, but of course I went with it to see how it was. The drink was decent, but I’m sorry, a 12 ounce mocha is not worth that much. Anyway, I hope this place continues to thrive for those who can afford it as I’m a big fan of coffee shops. Just us economical folks will have to avoid this place or get the cheapest items on the menu if such items exist, I suppose.

Great atmosphere at this newer coffee shop in the Granary building! Staff is always nice. The coffee tastes phenomenal. And I love that it is in a historical building on the waterfront. One of my favorite places to work out of in town.

Been here a few times. Their house made specials are very good (loved the cardamom syrup!), the staff are super friendly and the view of the water is dreamy.

Cool decor, indoor and outdoor seating options, area to host larger groups and exceptional hospitality!
We stopped here for a team event. They allowed us to bring in lunch and we ordered individual drinks within our group. The barista was so friendly and made our 15 drink order with no complaints. I've had the experience of going to some coffee shops and restaurants and they make you feel like a burden when you order. This was definitely not the case and felt refreshing to go somewhere that was welcoming.
I'll definitely be back! This coffee shop is in a really cool establishment - The Granary Building. I'd love to grab coffee again and walk around.

Great place for food and coffee by the water. Friendly service, open and relaxing atmosphere without feeling stuffy or reserved. A nice place to have coffee and a chat.
