Mclains is a necessity when coming to Lawrence or KC. craft coffee, delicious food, incredible pastries and great atmosphere.
One of the best matcha lattes in town and delicious baked good- staff is always so friendly
Save your time go anywhere else
Hands down my new favorite place in Lawrence to get breakfast, lunch, or brunch. The food is amazing, the coffee is to die for, and the bakery is out of this world!! I would recommend the espresso flavored macrons. *chef's kiss* And they even have a drive-thru!! They offer vegetarian options too.
This place is usually my go to for coffee, tea, and morning eats but the last couple of times I have ordered an iced matcha latte and a London fog both just tasted just like warm/cold milk. My mom ordered a pumpkin spice latte and it had no hints of pumpkin it was just unbearably sweet. Other than that the staff is super nice and the cheese danishes are to die for but always sold out.
Their food is always awesome. Their staff is always kind. I think the cold brew is actually just iced coffee but other wise everything is great.
Delicious food and friendly service. Coffee was flavorful and HOT, just the way it should be. Enjoyed eating outside on the patio. First watch has some stuff competition. The pastries are to die for. 😃
Overpriced and ok tastes on pastries. $4.25 for a latte with NO flavoring is high. Flavoring is an additional 75 cents so you really pay 5 bucks for a latte. Everywhere else you usually get the flavor included in the drink price. Like a vanilla latte is around $4.25 anywhere else I go. Staff is friendly though.
The gluten free chocolate cookie is amazing, and I love it every time. However, I accidentally ordered the vegan version last time. Not the same. I was disappointed in myself the entire morning. That speaks more to how good the gluten free version is rather than how poor the vegan one is. EDIT: I went back, and got the gluten free chocolate cookie. I love it. The sprinkles cookie is also amazing. McClain is great!
A 12oz coffee has eclipsed the $3 mark. If you get a 16oz it takes you over $4 with tax. TOO high! :( I'm from the birthplace of McClain's in Waldo and love this place, but I've yet to go back since I first paid this much for a cup. Farewell McClain's, you will be missed.
got our wedding cake from here and it was very good
Today was my first time there for a wedding consult. Izzy took care of us and the cake was delicious! We are so excited for our wedding and are so happy to be working with McLain’s. They even let us take home our leftover cupcakes from the tasting. Very transparent about their prices and lots of room for personalization. Edit: Our cake turned out absolutely beautiful for our wedding. The cake was also very yummy and the cupcakes and macarons were so cute!!
Some of the staff here are rude. 1st experience and last. I will not be returning.
My coffee and food was good, very good, excellent.
Everything was perfect. I like to spend my morning here when I'm tired or stressed out. Thanks for your great customer service.
The staff was friendly, and willing to discuss things in an engaged manner, but not very consumer-oriented beyond that (for example, ensuring you had proper silverware, creamer, etc, as those aren't necessarily easy to spot without a heads up). For my iced coffee and danish order: The danish tasted like uncooked dough with cheap raspberry jam spread on the center. It was without a doubt one of the worst pastries I've ever eaten. The iced coffee was bitter and poor quality, and hard to make my way through. I was charged for flavoring, despite the employee being the one to offer it and informing me that it didn't cost extra when I responded to her recommendation with a question on the matter. (The overcharge was about 75 cents, iirc- it wasn't enough to make a fuss over, but felt really unfriendly given that I had made sure to ask on the matter beforehand, and had gotten a very clear answer of it not costing anything). Side note, their iced coffee lids have a fragile plastic at straw hole end, so be careful about how you grab your coffee, as the entire lid will buckle at the slightest pressure if you touch it in the right spot. Not sure if that's something I can put on the restaurant but, all the same, spilling coffee on my shoes due to the lid giving way was something that definitely didn't improve my experience. My companion noted that their sandwich was overpriced relative to its quality, and that their hot coffee was average quality at best. Neither of us plan to ever visit this restaurant again. Ultimately, you've got a fairly stark looking diner-style cafe with subpar food and drink, at a high cost, with very wanting quality of service. I'm begrudgingly giving two stars on account that there was still room for things being worse (namely, if they'd had outright unfriendly employees and completely inedible food), but there's certainly far more room for things to improve. On the bright side, you do get metal silverware here (as with certain other, more homey
Amazing customer service. Friendly, courteous, and timely staff.
Not as expected
bacon was rock hard and old, all food was cold, pastry was yummy tho lol
I have been customer of McLain’s at other locations. Their bakery has always been very good. At this location I also tried the food. They were very delicious. See the pictures for yourself. I noticed that this location was review-bombed some months ago calling the menu prices expensive. Don’t know about you, but $10 for this large sandwich with fries is anything but expensive. Don’t let the overall ratings deter you from coming here.
