Word cafe is a gem of a place located in Downtown JC on Newark Avenue. While it's a book-store/cafe/gift shop it's as valuable a business as the multiple glowing night-life venues located in the neighborhood.
Some of the most memorable highlights of this place - There's a cute little cafe in the second half of the shop that serves brilliant coffee, croissants and a bunch of home-made organic food items. - The greeting cards are absolutely adorable. I've come here to pick a card for almost every special occasion ranging from "Happy Birthdays" to "All the bests" and "Valentines Days". The best part about them is the quirky messages/ visuals on the front side followed by space to write your own sweet message - The store holds a vast collection of books of all genres as well as other gift items such as candles, mementos and so on
pro tip : If you create an account with the shop, they do let you exchange items within 24 hours of purchase.
I bought a book that my 6th grader needed to read for school. It was the same price and much more convenient than Amazon. I called, they put it aside and had it ready for me to pick up. The staff was super friendly and helpful on the phone. I picked up a cappuccino at their coffee bar while there. Its nice to actually be asked if you need help from a knowledgeable staff and to support a local business. I plan to go here first when I need a book.
My husband and I go to Word often, usually with our one year old daughter. It's a great place to grab a coffee and hang out for a bit, browse books, and let the baby roam about. Excellent selection of books for children and adults, plus a wide variety of other items (greeting cards, candles, tote bags). Oh and definitely sign up for the rewards program!
This shop is the quintessential neighborhood indie bookstore. It has a ton of character, great selection of gifts for nerdy book lovers, and hosts frequent events. Word definitely makes the neighborhood feel special. I can't give a full five stars because the actual book selection is a bit limited, but still a great spot to hang out in downtown JC.
This bookstore is a truly great spot to stop by and browse. The atmosphere is pleasant and cozy, the staff is helpful, and there is even a nice seating section and mini cafe. Could not recommend more.
As the only book store in jersey city I'm glad word isn't just stopping there, they have a lot of fun events and get togethers happening every week, and are about as inclusive as any of the great stores on Newark Avenue. Not the best selection, but will order out for anything you need. I get most of my books here and are pretty satisfied with them. Five stars!
Lovely bookstore in Jersey City, loved the range/category of books. Apart from books they have a nice collection puzzles , games , quirky toys , artist supplies etc .
Decent place, ok-ish collection of books. Has a seating for about 10-12 people so be sure to grab a place quickly if you are going on weekend or at peak hours. You can buy a coffee, cookie and do some relaxed reading here. Would have given a 4 star if it wasn't for the music they were playing which was so not conducive to reading.
