Some of Indy’s best (and best-looking) espresso drinks, plus snacks, great pastries, and good wines at reasonable prices per bottle (glasses are on the high side of fair unless you’re catching a special discount time as noted on their socials), including lots of skin contact/orange. Didn’t try the cheeses. WFH, writers, and academic types take note: they intentionally don’t have wifi, which would be a bold move for most any coffee shop, but maybe think of it less as a coffee shop in the contemporary urban U.S. sense than as a wine bar and all-day counter-service restaurant that happens to start their daily service with great coffee. Don’t go if you intend to work with an internet connection, but do absolutely go for great times with others! Also, one of the city’s most attractive spaces to just exist comfortably.
It was okay. It’s a confusing place because they serve coffee and light breakfast options in the morning then just change to alcohol and light pub snacks at 4pm. Which is fine but that’s not clear anywhere. The 45 minutes I was there on a Tuesday night 3 different people came in confused because they wanted coffee. Trying to do too much. Could just serve everything all day. This isn’t fine dinning.
The service was okay. She seemed less than excited to be at work and when I was confused it was table service not self serve (like in the morning) she didn’t explain. Ordered some food and she never came back to my table to ask if I needed anything.
This place has a ton going for it. The ambiance is phenomenal. A lot of care and time went into the design and converting it from an old fire station. The bialys (or bagel) sandwiches were absolutely phenomenal and really special if a little expensive. The coffee was spot on but since it is from the same people behind Provider and Coat Check, all the specialty lattes were the same, which was slightly disappointing. Overall, very excited to come back when they start doing wine and cheese in the evening!
I was so excited when Chalet opened, but now I have had some not great experiences. The first time I arrived, I was told the kitchen had ran out of food. I did have a perfect mocha. The second time I arrived a half hour before they closed at 2pm. Ordered a drink, and as I walked over to sit down the staff member blocked my path and started stacking chairs. It seems reasonable to want to sit for a half hour. It’s my third trip that it was explained to me they close the kitchen at 1:30. They also defended my last experience as “it’s really important we clean the cafe early as we need to be out by 2pm for the dinner staff.” It seems the hours should be posted, “closed at 1:30pm.” While my drink and Pastry was perfect, the customer service leaves me feeling unwelcome.
Food and service was excellent! It's mainly a place for drinks, but the limited food menu fits the theme. The charcuterie board and raclette sandwich were delicious. Enjoyed the ambience, and our daughter especially enjoyed the free popcorn!
We ordered wine and beer. Everything tasted great, but I need to air my grievances on something: beers are served from those dreaded 12 ounce glasses. So, for $7-8 ($4 Miller High Life the one exception), you get 10-11 ounces. Please kindly drop those glasses for proper pints.
Happy to have Chalet in the neighborhood and we'll stop in now and then, but be prepared for prices that feel a bit steep. With their limited seating and focus on wine, the pricing might be intentional. If demand stays up, more power to you all, but otherwise I hope my feedback is helpful.
The vegan breakfast sandwich was delicious. The horchata latte was delicious as well. I loved the vibe of the coffee shop and outdoor seating area. Will come back. Great cider donuts.
We were really excited to try this new coffee shop in our neighborhood, however the experience was not good. Agreed that the atmosphere has a lot going for it, but the music was odd and not aligned with the atmosphere. Most people waited over 30 minutes for their lattes. Maybe this will smooth out as staff becomes more familiar with the espresso machines? Also the interior door knob fell off in someone’s hand so you could only exit when someone else was coming in the front door (door swings inward) 🤷🏻♀️ I would give this place some time to work out the kinks before going back or just plan to wait around for a while for your coffees. I had slightly higher expectations for our $7 lattes. The whole encounter was awkward and worthy of a Portlandia skit.
This is a nice and a relatively new coffee shop in the neighborhood with a unique atmosphere. If you’re tired of Starbuckses of the world then you may want to try Chalet.
I got a pistachio latte and it was great was done pretty quickly. Unfortunately, they don’t have chai lattes. The interior is very cool and there’s some outdoor seating + some parking up front.
This place is awesome! The quality of the food and coffee is wonderful. The atmosphere is perfect, absolutely nothing like it in town.
Disappointed that people would give it two stars the first week it is open in part because of something as small as the handle falling off (especially when there is an easily accessible second door to use 10 feet away)
If you like great coffee, great atmosphere, great food and friendly people, give it a try.
