Old Salem Cafe

Actually a very nice place with good food. We were traveling and very hungry and wanted a place to sit down. However, we found out there was nothing on the menu my wife could eat. Rather than leaving, my wife nicely agreed to let my son and me stay and order a good meal and she went and grabbed a veggie sub from next door and came back to sit with us while we ate. As we were paying, a very rude person (owner?) came out from the back and chewed my wife out saying she wasn't allowed to bring in other food. She asked for no explanation or reason... Just angrily insisted we were being discourteous. Guess she would have preferred if we had all left instead of giving her the business we did. Won't be coming back

Food was excellent. They were very busy but service was still excellent. I highly recommend Old Salem Cafe.

A bit disappointing. Would give 3.5 stars if I could. We have been coming to old Salem for years now and today seemed different. Maybe new ownership? First, I’d like to say the staff is very friendly and helpful.
Differences ? the menus are now on paper and breakfast isn’t available all day, Sandwiches are a la carte and food was super greasy.
The patty on the patty melt only covered 1/3 of the bread. The $2.75 for 5-6 over breaded onion rings? The Reuben was also very greasy.
I know businesses are hurting but I think it’s important to give people value for their money..

We search for great little local restaurants while traveling. Old Salem Cafe is another good one. Excellent food. Friendly staff. Glad we stopped.

A small town restaurant in a strip plaza with the BEST vegetable beef soup. We also enjoyed the Philly cheese steak and the daily specials from time to time. Service is good. Plenty of free parking. Convenient to Interstate 66. There is frequently live music and a variety of special events and activities. Never had to wait for a table but they are close to full sometimes.

My friend and I, who live 90 minutes apart, wanted to meet and have coffee. We picked Old Salem Cafe because it was centrally located; neither of us had been there before. Our plan was to meet for an hour or so, drink some coffee and be on our way.

I decided to bring the last of my homemade cherry cake for my friend to try. The waitress gave me a dirty look and then scolded us for bringing our own food!

Now, I understand that this place makes their money by serving food and drink, so on the surface, I’m sympathetic to people bringing food to avoid buying food. But, that is not what we did. We never planned to buy food (it was 10am), I had just a small sample to share with my friend.

The waitress made an assumption that was not true and was rude to us for no good reason. I ordered another cup of coffee and left a normal tip. The coffee was fine. The outside sitting area was nice.

I won’t say that I will never visit this place again, but I won’t go out of my way to visit there again. I guess the waitress would have been happier if we would’ve met in a park and not purchased anything from Old Salem Cafe; maybe that is what we will do next time.

This was a spur of the moment stop. Don't let the unoriginal sign scare you away. It is a little bit out of the way, but the food was tasty and the service was excellent. Really, the service was excellent, the server checked on us just often enough.

Another nice feature is the outdoor seating area, when the weather is good, it is a pleasant place to sit, even without a true view.

If you're looking for someplace unassuming, but with good prices and good service, you should enjoy Old Salem.
