Hand coffee here three days in a row and it’s perfect!!!
I’ve been here more times than I can count and always had a 5 star experience. Recently I tried one of their special pour over coffees and that was just incredible. High quality coffee/Tea and a welcoming staff. Highly recommend this place!
Top notch coffee! Got an iced latte with caramel and it was delicious. A must try if you are in Portland :)
Coffee is good! But the cafe has no wifi. Which is totally fine but hard for someone who has to travel for work and options are limited! :)
Coffee is fantastic, personable staff, quiet coffee house vibe
This location is my go to when in Portland, ME. As a music maker, any establishment displaying their PRO license, gets my business. As a bonus the coffee is amazing!! Thanks for supporting music creators and making great coffee.
Incredible coffee. Friendly staff. Quick service. Relaxed atmosphere. This place has a really well curated selection of beans. I tried their pour over and it was actually done right. I had the Colombian as per the server's recommendation and the taste profile was very exotic and nuanced. Delicious. My friend had an oat milk latte which I also tried and was excellent.
Good vibes. Good place to try something that isn't run of the mill.
Best tasting coffee in Portland, probably all of Maine. Will be ordering beans online in the future!
I’m not a morning person, but I gladly got up early to walk to Speckled Ax in the mist and rain multiple times when I was in Portland. Espresso/lattes are great, and so are their beans - the Shantawene is especially awesome.
Best coffee in town. I have been a barista for 10 years and my standards could be labeled as particular. Cheers
One of the best roasters nearby, with a great cafe right on congress street.
I stopped in on a road trip to get a cup of coffee, and met the nicest baristas ever. Rob and Zara are the best, and so was the cappuccino.
Coming from Australia it was so good to finally find some truly well made espresso coffee. It's so hard to find in the US. These negative reviews are hilarious: complaining about the higher cost (you get what you pay for), or the small cup sizes (that's a Medium in Australia! Why do people want lightly flavoured scalding hot milk?), or saying you're better off going to Starbucks! If you actually want a well made coffee made with quality beans then you won't be disappointed here.
I can't believe it's been 10 years since this place opened. I remember going there on their first week. Matt's coffee is some of the best I've ever had. I worked in a coffee shop as a barista and I am very particular when it comes to my coffee and espresso. We were one of the first places to feature Matt's coffee and I was instantly impressed and hooked on this brand. Glad to see they are still doing well.
What would Portland be like without Speckled Ax? Love this spot. Love the coffee. Plus it's the only spot I'll trust outside of The Proper Cup.
Wife just went this weekend and said she had the best coffee of her life here and brought back two bags of beans. Wow I have to agree, incredibly smooth and flavor is awesome. I thought my daily organic coffee beans were good but these just destroyed them forever... and I just used a standard drip maker, nothing fancy. Getting some subscriptions for xmas gifts! Big thanks from Good Start Packaging!
The coffee is fantastic! I had an oat milk latte and it was great. However I’m giving 3 stars because it’s also very expensive and there is no wifi. Typically when I go out for a nice coffee I like to hangout in the cafe, do some work, enjoy the atmosphere. I’m surprised in 2022 there’s a coffee place that has plenty of sitting space doesn’t have wifi. The space doesn’t feel very inviting to hang out.
Best coffee beens in Maine, and of course Portland!
In from out of town and wanted a Sunday morning latte. Sign said $4.75 but apparently that’s for an eyedropper full. 2 larges cost $15. Service was slow and not pleasant. Decided to take them to go, got 2 block, took a sip and milk was sour. Will never return.
