The coffee shop is cute but has some weird styling choices mixed in such as a kite and a disco ball. The iced latte that I ordered with oat milk tasted like it was made with soy milk, it might have been just a really bad oat milk. The taste was pretty bad and the latte separated quickly with a pretty funky layer on the bottom.
I hope this place never closes. North Oakland has been aching for a cozy, authentic coffee shop for awhile; Dunkin will never cut it. Great, fresh food, pastries, coffee, drinks, you name it. Perfect spot to have a quick breakfast before school on a cold winter morning.
Very pleasant environment and the staff is cheerful and helpful. Great coffee and great food. Ideal place to meet a friend or open your computer and get some work done. A+
IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE STOP OVER'S. EVERYTHING IS HOME MADE AND FRESH! A LOT OF COLLEGE STUDENTS EAT OUT OF THERE. THE WORKER'S ARE FRIENDLY AND POLITE AND SOMETIMES FUNNY. GOOD FOOD AND GOOD SWEETS AND GOOD COFFEE.
I end up coming here a lot since it's the local bakery/coffee shop. The vegetarian selection is good, but there are basically no vegan options. They sell the same things day-to-day for the most part, with limited stuff every now and then. When they have it, their blueberry muffins are incredible. They have a meaty and vegetarian option for both breakfast sandwiches and hand pies. Both the vegetarian sandwiches and hand pies are delightful.
For vegan coffee drinks, they make their own oat milk in-house. I would say it's closer to a skim milk in richness than a whole milk, so keep that in mind if you plan to order an espresso drink. Their cold brew is also very good, and if you are fine drinking dairy then I highly recommend the princess cold brew. It is similar to and inspired by Vietnamese iced coffee as it contains sweetened condensed milk.
They also sell loaves of Japanese milk bread (shokupan) every day, and I believe that is the bread they use for the sandwiches. Keep in mind that these loaves are not very large, so if you are trying to make a Japanese-style sandwich with them, the portions will be small. On Fridays they sell an all-day loaf which I believe is sourdough. I recall liking it but it's been a while since I have bought it.
Sidecar used to be known as Pie For Breakfast and had a larger selection of pies. They still have vinegar pie slices which I definitely recommend, and very rarely they will bring back their miniature pies on the run.
It's worth mentioning that they have two gender-neutral bathrooms. One has a urinal. So just use whatever you feel like. Finally, a drink and food item will typically cost you between $6 and $13 total.
The brownie was honestly meh. I've baked better at home which was disappointing. The person at the front desk was lovely though and the environment seemed nice.
Literally so so so happy they are open! I have been craving a local bakery/coffee shop in North Oakland for a few years, and finally we have one!! I got a Ham and Gruyère sandwich along with an oat-milk caramel latte. Both were so delicious! The employees were also so sweet and helpful! I have no doubt in my mind that this lovely place will succeed and continue to be amazing.
Absolutely the best coffeeshop community I hace ever experienced. The pastries are top notch and being made in house are fresh than any other coffeeshop in the 'burgh! The coffee is really pretty good and is currently bring supplied to them by the fresh new Cafetano in the strip. Their seating arrangements are very thoughtful and perfect for a first date or an all day study sesh. I would happily recommend this coffeeshop to anyone I know.
Great coffee shop in north oakland from the people behind another favorite city spot (Butterjoint!). Fantastic cozy vibe with plenty of seating. Hand pies are too good with flaky, buttery crust and savory fillings. I can't get enough.

The best desserts and food around. Friendly staff. If you stop in for lunch you won't be disappointed. Enjoy!
