Only the best: the coffee, the root beer, and the friendliness of the staff. Since the cafe is located in the school of divinity, it is no wonder that food tastes divine there. Ideal location for anyone who seeks a quick out-of-body spiritual experience in the 15 min break within lectures.

One of good-coffee cafes in the University of Chicago. Located in the basement of Divinity School, which you can access through Main Quadrangle UChicago. They serve coffee, snacks, warm foods, cold drinks, sometimes slice of pizza too! Bring cash with you since they only receive payment in cash.

Hidden gem in the basement of the Divinity school. $1 coffee refills (any size). Very nice baked goods are delivered around 9am, and inexpensive lunch entrees are kept in a hot display starting around 10:30, these are usually cheaper and comparable in quality to the nearby food trucks. Seating is limited. Days of operation depend heavily on the undergrad schedule (eg not open during winter holiday period).

Coffee and atmosphere is wonderful. At any given point they have 4 different drip coffees available all of which are great quality. Their Yerba mate was also very smooth, flavorful and not bitter whatsoever.

Very interesting place and the name is a smart play of words considering it is located at the Divinity School. Such a classic University of Chicago thing to do. Besides the clear elitaire naming of this basement coffee shop, Grounds of Being is proof that sophisticated coffee culture is still alive in Starbucks-ridden North America.

It's fun that it's in the basement. Dont know how people get work done there as the seating area is small but they have a good variety of coffee. They have people bring in really good packaged lunches. It's cash only though so remember to stop by an atm

This is UChicago's coffee shop. Don't be offended by their cash-only requirement, because the coffee and the ambiance and the friendly service is worth the slight inconvenience.

If you're looking for a long-term study location, drop in early in the morning and grab one of the corner seats. Then relax and lean in to all the diverse beats and phenomenal music selection (the baristas have exceptional taste), and get to your work.

Better yet, enjoy the best cup of normal joe (Colectivo beats Metropolis by far) for just $1. That is incomparable.

1.50 dollar for a decent medium sized coffe..can’t say no to that

I often feel like it is difficult to explain an idea or a feeling about a place using only language...but you can talk to people about such thoughts over coffee here.

They used to sell double espressos for $1.

Bring cash. The physical kind.

God drinks coffee here. 5 stars isn’t enough.

My go-to spot! Love the coffee ☕️
