We spent a few months on Maui checking out the various farm to table operations and agri-tourism opportunities when we stumbled upon the Maui Mountain Homegrown Coffee website. What a find. I reached out to Bobbie directly via email and she was gracious enough to invite us to the farm and take the time to show us around, explain how she produces word class coffee with care and dedication, and invite us into her home for a coffee tasting.
The fact that the experience was very personal made it stand out from the more commercial farm tourism activities in Hawaii. The quality of Coffee is of course top notch but you don't have to be a coffee drinker to enjoy the experience.
To anyone visiting Maui interested in learning where their morning Java comes from, I would highly recommend they reach out and visit Bobbie's farm. Just remember visitation is by appointment only so reach out to her by email in advance.
I had the pleasure of visiting the farm this past May and met the owner, Bobbie. Within a few minutes after arriving I was greeted, petted the dogs, handed a bucket and was shown how to select and pick the best coffee berries for roasting, by the owner herself! I guess she felt the best way to learn about something is to do it....so I did. Bobbie is a gracious and very knowledgeable host and taught me more about coffee in my short visit than I would have ever learned from a book. The steps from picking, removing the pulp, fermenting away the slippery coating, drying and removing the "shell" were shown in great detail by her. After all is said and done, 9-10 lbs of freshly picked "berries" only yields 1 lb of roasted coffee.....kind of explains the price of a really fine coffee, and this stuff is tops! I know because she brewed a pot that was roasted the day before my visit.....wow, not like anything I've ever had before! Walking into her home, I couldn't tell if I was in a coffee shop or a chocolate factory....the aromas are that clear. I even got a chance to taste a perfectly ripe coffee "cherry" right off the tree.....they're actually quite sweet. Anyone can see that it's a labor of love for her, and it comes out in the final product: a soothing, chocolate aroma and a delicate, well balanced flavor. Like a fine wine, it has a lasting and complex finish....not something you can get at your local coffee shop. I'm talking about the medium roast here....I can't wait to try the dark "Volcano" roast! To top it all off, she does this organically and a portion of the profits go to saving the native birds! Kudos Bobbie.....and thank you! If you like fine coffee, this is a "must try"....and if you're ever in Maui, you've got to stop by her place.... and see a piece of Maui that has to be experienced to be believed!
From growing to picking to roasting, every step of the way, Bobbie and her mom make sure that their coffee is the freshest and tastiest coffee that it can possibly be. This coffee puts other coffees to shame! The only reason not to drink it is that you will be spoiled and unable to drink regular coffee. And the farm is just beautiful with fruit trees and a vegetable garden that is just incredible!
We were given an excellent tour of the beautiful farm and enjoyed the wonderful coffee during our entire stay in Maui. We will be ordering it to have at home as well!
Not a sign of existence. Almost impossible to find. No answer to a phone call. We (on accident) trespass neighbor to find out which farm is it, but the gate was closed anyway.
