I don't get to Huntsville very often but I typically look forward to eating at Cafe Texan but today I was DISAPPOINTED.
Mom had Pancake, Bacon, and an Egg and was happy with her meal
I had Chicken Fried Steak (regular), Side Salad w/French Dressing, Potato Salad, Pinto Beans, and asked for some Cornbread.
Salad was a little small and the French Dressing was Very Thick & Very Sweet. All I could taste of the Potato Salad was the Mustard and the texture was just above mashed. Pinto Beans were average Canned Beans. The Chicken Fried Steak was above average but well below what I remember. I asked for Cornbread and received Rolls that looked house made but were Dense & Cold.

Great piece of Americana! It is the oldest operating cafe in Texas
Very homey with friendly people and a welcoming atmosphere. Great comfort food at more than reasonable prices. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Like stepping back in time.

Very disappointed! After the good reviews and as many people that were eating there, thought it would be good. Pancake tasted good, but were cold, did not even melt butter. Biscuits were very hard. Told waitress nicely when she came to clear table and she did not even say anything. When she checked us out, told me she could not do anything on something she did not make. Said she has been doing this long enough that she knew how it went???? Was just telling her it was not very good, not wanting her to comp anything. Next time just apologize and say you will tell the cooks so they are aware. Even after all this I still tipped her.

Down home cooking at an affordable price. Staff is fantastic and makes you feel like family. Check out historic photographs and artwork for Huntsville as you walk around the restaurant. Prices and portions are excellent and food is homemade.

Quite possibly the oldest cafe in Texas! Food is great! Fresh and hearty ingredients! Service was great and on point, and restaurant is filled with nostalgia of Huntsville history.
This is "old school" done right, Highly Highly recommend!!!

pathetic customer service and dining experience. the 2 waitresses acted as if they were doing us a favor by taking the order and bringing the food to the table. the food was barely warm and at best, average in flavor. we will not return and will advise family and friends to avoid.

The food was horrible. Instant potatoes, hamburger steak had no flavor, smothered in powdered gravy and American cheese. My daughter had a hamburger and my hamburger steak was the same size and shape. It was just a hamburger patty. Lazy cooking don’t know how this place has almost a 5 stars review.

Enjoyed breakfast here in this iconic Huntsville TX cafe. Great food cooked like l like it and lots of home town feel to it! Located on the courthouse square and popular with the locals! Would definitely eat here again.

We really wanted to like this cafe, as it's the closest thing to the diners up north or east. We gave the Cafe Texan two tries: once, two years ago, and the second time recently. We only went for breakfast both times, so take this review with these factors in mind. The main part of many breakfast dishes is eggs, yes? They seemed to not know how to cook eggs. The scrambled eggs were hard and overcooked, the omelette was tough and overcooked (and very greasy), and the French toast had barely any egg mixture at all. A decent French toast will be soaked all the way through with a flavorful egg mixture. This French toast was dry and flavorless. The hash browns were the frozen kind you can buy at the grocery store, and they were limp and greasy. Additionally, the toast--you can't ruin toast, right?--was crumbly, as if it was very old bread that they had retoasted from yesterday. They do not seem to make any of their own bases or sauces, so I doubt that anything you'd order for lunch would be good. These are very similar experiences to the ones we had before with this food, though we went in hoping it would be different this time. Also, for the squeamish among us, our plates were very scratched and kind of dirty. There aren't many breakfast places in Huntsville, which is probably why this cafe has never felt the need to provide good food at breakfast (no competition), but don't waste your money there. A bowl of cereal at home would have been better, really, and that's sad.
