...you really don't want to come here...why such a negative 5-star review?!? Because this place is the best kept secret of Fredericksburg! It's a Texas Honk Tonk meets Roadside Diner combination...and if your privileged enough, you might hear & meet the proprietor and legendary bluesman Johnny Nicholas (ask him about "the box set", your are in for a treat!). So all that said, please don't visit and take my spot in line (reservations recommend, request to sit in the Music Room), and leave an equally scathing review to keep Hill Top Cafe AWESOME! (enjoy!)

Texas Landmark locale for amazing food and music.

I've have not had such a great seafood diner in ages. Being in landlock Fredericksburg seafood is often fried and gross. This meal was like being in a Cajun shack on the bayou eating with friends. The staff was delightful and the decarations where crazy fun. There was no live music this night but I hear tells of wonderful shows. Don't be turned away but the ram shackle outside because there is a hidden pearl on the inside. Special thanks to our waitress Teri you were wonderful and so on top of things. Great job.

My husband and I went to the Hill Top Café during a recent visit for my husband's birthday. Since my husband is a long-time musician, particularly in the western swing circle, we both thought this would be a great venue to attend. The food was overpriced, but decent and music ok. The biggest disappointment we encountered was after the show. Johnny spent a considerable amount of time visiting with several guests and then rudely made his way to the door as my husband attempted to briefly speak with him. The $93 spent was a waste of money and we definitely will not be back.

My wife and I, and another couple heard very good reviews for Hill Top and it looked interesting and charming. Unfortunately from the moment we sat down the experience was poor. They sat us at a very small uncomfortable wood booth, my friend an I are both over 6'2" and it was just completely too tight. We politely asked for a different table and the younger girl nervously said that they usually don't do that. What?! There were several open tables and it was already later in the evening. She asked someone though but came back and said sorry they can't move us. So bad start, but we stayed positive and looked forward to the food. Appetizer of flaming Greek cheese=not good. Funny taste from whatever liquor they use to ignite and it was served with odd whole roasted garlic cloves and croutons which were supposed to pass for crostini. Our entrees got worse. I had chopped steak which had no seasoning so it basically tasted like plain hamburger. Gravy was also bland. Veggies on the side seemed old and reheated with a very odd taste. Mashed potatoes were okay at best. And I have no idea what the few funky soggy okra pieces were on the plate for. Overall the dish was a 2/10. Others had stuffed shrimp for $38 that was apparently disgusting and just all breading. Same gross side dishes. My wife had fried shrimp that was okay but she ate none of the sides. And my buddy had a $40 'Greek' filet that was undercooked and under seasoned. He was not impressed at all. Server never came back to ask if we wanted another cocktail or other drink once food was served. The prices were exhorbatant. It felt like a total fleecing to be honest. It's like they know visitors come to the hill country for quaint spots like this and can overcharge for sub par food. To be fair, the Manhattan cocktail I had was tasty. Everything else was a failure for us. Be cautious about other reviews, I wouldn't trust them if they rave about the food at Hill Top. Perhaps the restaurant had a good reputation in past years and it's fallen off. I don't know, but I can say it was the most disappointing experience in a long time. Wish I could report otherwise.

Great atmosphere, delicious menu, waitstaff and bartenders are spot on. Over the years I have met people from all over the world and all walks of life at Hill Top. Celebrate, romance the one you love, or sit down for a cold one with a great burger!

A little over priced but, you get what you pay for. The breakfast was awesome! Staff was courteous. Good live music. They probably served the best greek omelet ive ever had.
