Absolutely amazing food made better by Colllin's attention to detail in timing the food and picking an order that the food came out in that tasted perfect, complemented each plate and helped us clean our plates (read:bread items interspersed). We will absolutely be back and will request Collin!
The vibe here is so amazing. First time in Charlottesville and some friends suggested this place. It truly did not disappoint. The smoked tomatoes and bacon wrapped dates were my favorite and whoever made my dirty martini knows whats up.
Everything about Mas is amazing; the food, the service, the atmosphere...They are amazing!
Cozy, laid-back local tapas place with delicious food. Strongly recommend the beacon dates, mussels and the carne asada!
Mas is a great spot to enjoy tapas and wine. Lovely space, rotating menu and art. Perfect for date night.
Every dish is better than the last. Really enjoy sitting at the bar and watching the magic happen as the food is prepared right in front of you. Will come back as often as possible.
This place was phenomenal. Great service. Great food, delicious cocktails. Will definitely be back.
One of my favorite restaurants, hands down. Worth every penny. Get the anchovies.
I love MAS! In the winter I like to sit at the bar and watch them prepare food. In the summer I love sitting outside. A small pitcher of their delicious sangria is enough for four!
Alrighty, I wanted to give what I feel is a pretty honest review of this place. I’ve heard from several people in Charlottesville that Mas is so good and definitely have to check it out. We’ve been trying to get a reservation for a couple of months (our schedules are crazy) and finally got one. Be prepared to reserve ahead of time for sure. Ambiance is nice, they tried to seat us initially at the first table by the door and that was a no-go cause it’s freezing and when the door opens it’s even worse. Definitely need a space heater up by the front. The decor is cool and eclectic, rest if the restaurant was warm and tables are spaced nicely so your not on top of others. Waitress was friendly and attentive, explained how things worked and had suggestions when asked. Nothing over the top to write home about but I wouldn’t complain about anything either. Food: so here is why in my opinion they didn’t get 5 stars. Overall, the food was underwhelming for the price. There was a lot of bread and it’s possible that’s just the items we chose but still, a lot of the dishes came with bread. Bread was fresh and tasty though. We ordered a apple and cheese/bread starter and it was 3 large slices of cheese about 6 thin apple slices and a chunk of bread. The menu said it was unassuming and it definitely lived up to its name. Presentation could have been better. Add some oil and pepper to go with it. We ordered this artichoke dish which once it came out it was essentially artichoke dip. Tasty, yes but it’s butter and cheese so that’s generally tasty. The spanish aspect to the menu made it a little misleading. We had the mussels which was a large portion but they didn’t have much flavor and were slightly gritty, which tells me they weren’t the highest quality. We also got the Arroz con pollo, chicken was tasty but the grain was undercooked and still hard in some places. I’m sure we could have sent it back but we’re just not like that. We also got the chorizo dish which was just, meh
Wow! I can see why it's hard to get a table here. We were lucky the weather was beautiful in November and were able to sit outside. The food and service were fabulous. We loved everything, but the Arroz Con Pollo and the Carne Asda required a second helping?
Tl;dr: A good spot for a special dinner, but the prices don’t represent the dishes served. I went here the other night with family to celebrate a birthday, and walked in not knowing what to expect. The seating and decor was pleasing and interesting, albeit a bit uninspired. They provided a satisfactory experience that left me feeling full and happy, but I don’t think I’ll probably go back. The good: Friendly, experienced (for the most part) waitstaff, fair portions, overall good food. A good location for a celebration or date. Decent ambiance and lots of art on the walls. The bad: Many of the dishes felt a bit underwhelming in their flavor profiles. Interesting combinations and ingredients didn’t make for very interesting flavors. The hostess also couldn’t find our reservation, which, while totally not a big deal, was a little bit of a blow as the first experience walking inside. Orders: Bread and cheese- exactly how it sounds. Fantastic bread (a recurring theme) and good cheese. The cheese was maybe too bold and funky for the delicate bread for my taste. Salad- tasty but nothing special. Unusual dressing which I liked. Not really a standout but everyone in my party enjoyed it. Broccolini- went between fantastic and blegh bite to bite. Not sure what the seasoning was (perhaps smoked salt and black pepper?). It was delicious in some parts but unevenly applied so that some bites were hugely overpowering in salinity or peppery flavor. Halibut- this would have been amazing if the curry was just slightly different. Crispy, well cooked, flaky fish, good rice, and a refreshing slaw set this dish up to be a home run. The curry was a great texture but flavor wise, it was just too savory and salty on the upper rear area of the palette. I’ll talk more about this later. Artichoke heart cheese dip- another instance of a delicious dish with fantastic bread being taken down a notch by overpowering cheese. Perfect texture and very well done, just too cheesy (and I don’t sa
Mas is one of the best places to eat in Virginia. Period. Consistently impressive with its flavor, service and atmosphere. Highly recommended.
High-end fine dining price $$$ with mediocre service style, dishes (seasoning was so bland & unadventurous we wanted salt, pepper, hot sauce...anything), atmosphere... I'd gone somewhere else if I read this kind of review and knew this in advance.
Was so excited to get back to Mas the other week with friends (on a Friday night). We had only just received our first round of drinks when our hope for a fun get together was dashed by an extremely rude interaction with staff that was so unwarranted and shocking we decided to leave after paying for what we’d ordered so far. I’m sure the food is fine, but wouldn’t recommend to anyone trying to enjoy a meal with friends.
Would leave less than one star if possible. I have never gotten up and left a meal before even eating - but did so here after being treated extremely rudely by the staff. Strongly encourage those thinking of dining here to reconsider. Charlottesville has a great deal of wonderful restaurants with amazing staff. Mas is not one of them. I suspect there must have been a recent change in management or ownership - one that hopefully does not last long.
I’ve been to a thousand+ restaurants across the world and almost every restaurant in Charlottesville and I’ve never been treated like I was at Mas. I was there with 5 friends and within 5 minutes of us being there having a good time and talking and laughing an employee walked over to our table and said “you need to cut this out right now.” We thought he was joking at first. We were not being louder than usual. He said “I’m serious.” And stared at us hard. We were not being loud, we’d were not saying anything inappropriate, we were simply enjoying eachother’s company as one does at a restaurant and they basically told us “don’t say a word.” That’s not how I want to enjoy dinner, it’s not how I think any other customers want to enjoy dinner, and I would encourage any other customers to avoid this restaurant as they are simply unwilling to accommodate a group if the group is not one that will sit there quietly and eat their dinner. I have never given a restaurant a one star review but I can confidently say that this restaurant deserves the low review I’m giving based on the way they treated us.
Incredible experience - what a unique spot. The Paella was just right but the artichoke dip was to die for. Come here with friends and share - you wont regret it.
Amazing tapas. The smoked tomatoes, and Lamburgesa were standouts, but everything was delicious. Service was great and the ambience fun!
Really wanted to like this place, so I gave it a another try. Loved their menu options, but the delivery wasn’t there. Some of the dishes were very salty and lacked flavor, some were a bit too smokey for my liking. That paired with the limited service we received, it wasn’t a worthwhile experience for more than $50/person.
