Sump Coffee

There is no shortage of top-notch third wave coffee shops in the St. Louis metro area, but this one tops them all. This is one of the best roasters in the Midwest, if not the country. I’ve only explored their house espresso blend, but it is absolutely amazing, with absolutely the perfect balance of acidity, fruitiness, and floral notes to drink on its own or to punch through a little bit of steamed milk. The drinks crafted at the coffee bar are incredible. Every shot I’ve ever had a barista pull here has been perfection, and the milk is always impeccably textured. I think this may very well be the best cortado on the planet. And while it is almost a travesty to cover up the flavor of the coffee with anything else, the specialty beverages are always interesting and worth a try. Always my go-to shop when I’m in STL—it’s hard to stop myself at three beverages here and not walk out with a suitcase full of beans!

First off,I understand that coffee is a wildly subjective topic and it can get very complex,with that said I was disappointed with me 2nd experience with buying Sump whole beans (melting darkness roast).I purchased these same beans about 2 yrs ago and liked them enough so I figured I'd try them again since I ran out of my usual beans plus I like to support local whenever able..This time around the beans seemed vastly different.The roast appeared much lighter than before, which I'm aware that Sump roasts on the lighter end of the spectrum so I wasn't expecting some charred Starbucks like roast, especially since I've purchased this same roast in the past.There was also a lot of chaff and drastic inconsistencies in the bean size and color.I have a relatively expensive and good quality home grinder (flat burr) and I maxed out the fineness on my grinder and it still wasn't fine enough to dial this bean in.I have a step less adjustment grinder and have never had this problem with any other bean before.I can't explain what the issue is this time..

A new favorite! Can’t believe I haven’t tried this coffee shop before. I got the chocolate lavender coffee, which was delicious. I also got some tasty banana chocolate cookies, which come in a 4-pack. Love the vibe inside, and there’s plenty of seating outside at tables. Will definitely be back! Update 3/31/23: Still one of my favorites in Stl! Love the new Tagalong coffee. Sadly the Ethiopian beans I bought from here recently were too hard for my burr grinder and jammed it. Still love the coffee shop though!

my sister and I stopped in after a weekend of Story Of The Year meet and greet and concert! anyways my sister got a "Sumatra" black coffee, quote "I loved it, would definitely order again!". for myself I got the mint chocolate latte... lemme tell you a warm Thin Mint cookie in the morning just hits different!!! don't forget the chocolate banana bread, so good! definitely stopping by next time we are in St Louis!!!

I personally think this is the best coffee in the city. I like my coffee black to really taste the roast, and their roasts are phenomenal.

TLDR: Yes, yes, yes. Great cappuccino and really delicious apple gouda scone. I was skeptical of the apple gouda scone, but it was so intriguing I just could ‘t pass by without having a taste. Did not disappoint. It was incredibly flakey inside and crunchy on top. It could have been deep fried for all I know. A slightly sticky and sweet drizzle made it quite good. The cappuccino was delightful and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Interesting and impressive decor using wood. The service was excellent. 2 rooms, the main area, and a smaller undecorated room in the back. Small patio in front. Coffee tasted great! Be aware that the coffee sizes are a little smaller than you might expect. My latte was about 8-10 oz. Surrounding neighborhood is not the safest, but then again, it's St Louis city, so be aware.

My favorite place to get coffee in St. Louis! The staff is awesome and give great recommendations based on your tastes.

The vibes in here were really cool! The coffee was delicious. Even if the coffee absolutely sucked (which it doesn’t), the atmosphere makes up for it. It is in a part of town with beautiful historic houses and feels almost as if you’re walking into a cafe in Paris. My only complaint is that the staff was very unfriendly and that kind of ruined the experience for me.

Staff here can coax flavors from a coffee bean like no other roaster or brewer in town. Love to get an unadorned espresso followed by a pour-over of whatever the barista's currently excited about.

Recommended by my PT in KCMO.. Took a buddy here while visiting family in the lou... Best i literally have ever had. Picked up some whole beans for my espresso machine at home.

Amazing coffee! Always, consistently delicious! Beautiful roasts turned into the tastiest cups of coffee. I always get an espresso and a pour over. Roasts are always seasonal, so there's always something new and delicious to drink. Baristas are kind and skilled. If you love coffee you'll love coffee at Sump!

Visiting St Louis and needed to try out a local coffee shop. I had a caramel bourbon latte and it tasted so good! The latte was well made with awesome latte art.

Absolutely wonderful. The whole experience. Lots of ACTUAL coffee to choose from and a whole vibe to match. . (tbh) I wasn’t prepared for all the options being from out of town and magically finding this place on a whim.. but as a “black” coffee drinker I couldn’t have been more excited. starbucks to Sump is like a budlight to an artisanal ipa. Two very different priorities and goals. . The staff was phenomenal. Warm, welcoming, kind, respectful. I’ve been to hundreds of different coffee shops traveling the US and this was by far the most kind interactions I’ve had almost anywhere. The bathroom was clean and also its own Vibe which is always a pleasant surprise. . The coffee I was recommended though was next level. she said the common favorite was the Colombian and it did not disappoint. It was roasty and smooth like a chai tea but wet like water. the aromas to match with a cute little beaker/pottery cup presentation. You can tell your drinking a real earth bean grown with love and Alchemized properly with care into a lovely bean juice. The addict in me could’ve had 5 more. . Wish the store was open longer but no doubt, absolutely fabulous. (Top 2 ever, it’s up there with the puppy coffee shop in Minneapolis).
