Food: Burger was on point along with Bone marrow they served was a delicacy which hard to find. Service: One of the best service I’ve received, the server was enthusiastic during the whole experience, positive vibe and explained the menu well which made it easy to order. Atmosphere: Chill place for gathering with lounge music and great energy from all the staff.
Been living in Chicago for over seven years, and this was my first Au Cheval experience. Definitely worth the hype! Was fortunate to only have a wait time under ten minutes at 3pm on a weekday 🙏 We sat right at the middle of the bar and got to see where all the magic happens. The peppered bacon was almost like pork belly with how tender some pieces were. Burger was on point, as well, but the highlight was asking one of the cooks, Jeff, about the chicken he was prepping for another patron. It looked BANGIN, so I asked if he thought it was good. Without hesitation he answered yes then proceeded to make me and my friend a half order. Thanks, Jeff! Dudes next to us work/live in the area and said they come in often. Told us the bologna sandwich was a must try, and Jeff confirmed adding, "It's the best thing on the menu." Was too stuffed after our burgers, fries, plate of bacon, and additional chicken to crush one there, so placed an order to go. Ate it the second I got home 😅, and I gotta say it's arguably better than the burger (which again, was fantastic)! Will be back without a doubt 💯
Au Cheval has been cited by a few food publications for having one of the best hamburgers in America. We stopped by around 5.30pm midweek and found the wait to be around 1 hour for a table. They will take your phone number and call when you are within 5-10 minutes of being seated. We tried their single and double cheeseburger with bacon. Not sure if these are the best in America but what was served was really good, well balanced beef, cheese, special sauce along with the slab of maple glazed bacon. You can add with egg as well if you like. They have a good list of cocktails and handcraft beer to pair with the burgers.
This place was out of this world. The only negative thing about this place was the three hour wait, but man the wait was definitely worth it. If you're hungry and have a huge appetite then get a double patty burger but a single is far more than enough. The fries and hasbrowns were a bit inconsistent, but the burger was superb and was definitely the game winner. I would come again and wait for another burger next time I'm in Chicago!
These guys crush it. What an amazing operation. Forget what you may think about the world being "short staffed", as there were bodies everywhere...all on same page. We needed nothing. Fast and efficient. We had the fried chicken, bologna sandwich and mornay covered fries. Bring your appetite. Well curated beer list and cocktails too. Kudos to those who run this place. "It's hard work to make it look this easy".
Went during a weekday lunch and the wait was less than 15 minutes. The space is very small and cozy, and the food was definitely outstanding. 🦴 The bone marrow is very flavorful and juicy, combined with the toast is amazing. 🍔 Definitely add egg and bacon to the burger. The bacon is thick and not dry, and the combination is so satisfying overall.
Very popular and pricey diner in the area with a loyal following. There is almost always a long line and the wait time is often more than 30 minutes on a random weekday. General Jane's honey fried chicken 🐔🍯 was finger licking good. Roasted beef bone marrow 🦴 was truly amazing when paired with their pulled beef cheek marmalade. A definite treat. Their signature burgers were ok, somewhat overpriced.
It is worth the wait! The burger is fantastic. Best burger I’ve had in the city. Fries are phenomenal. Wait staff are professional and quick. The only potential downside is you might come out smelling like burgers.
My buddies and I were in for a guys trip from New Orleans and loved it. We all dropped in right at 10 or so on a Sunday for brunch and it didn’t disappoint. I had the omelet which literally was like cutting butter with a knife while the guys had the classic burger. 10/10
The staff is amazing. Food is amazing. From the host stand, to the server, management and chefs at the counter top I was blown away. The service is next level. Steven, Kat and Travis made my night so special. I can’t wait to come to Chicago again to feast here. Y’all are truly amazing. Btw If you don’t want to commit to a full portion of the bone marrow they do offer a half portion!
Overall we had a good experience. My son wanted to try it out. He had been to the other location previously. Went on a Sunday afternoon so it was pretty busy. We waited about an hour and half. They text when you’re table is ready and you’re able to follow along your wait time via the link they text you. Luckily the weather was nice so we took a walk down “restaurant row”. The actual restaurant is pretty small. It had a pretty cool atmosphere and very nice people. The food was good but a little pricey in my opinion. No sides are included. The honey fried chicken and fries were good, too.
Tasty burgers, fast service! This place is small and cozy. Lots of beers on tap, great booths and a long bar for patrons. Side note, single burgers have two patty’s and a double has three patty’s!
Burger definitely lives up to it's reputation. I wouldn't get the bacon added again for the cost, but I'll add an egg next time. Had the classic cheeseburger, which is actually a double patty, which was more than enough. Also got the bread and butter pickles which were real good. More than two of us could eat in an order. If you're planning lunch, go early and get there before they open.
I came here 2 times, both times the service was as impeccable as the food was. Very gluten free friendly (bonus points for separate fryers!) and our server gave really good recommendations for those with strict dietary limitations. I also had the omelette (not pictured - I have no self control and just dug in without taking a picture) but everything we had we loved. Every item (that we can have) was a safe choice. Definitely lives up to the hype :)
Au Cheval has long been hailed as the THE burger crown royal without much competition, so if you took the time to wait in line, will the joint exceed your expectations? So first, besides insanely awesome burgers, they offer other dishes for those who crave something different from finger-licking delicious fried chicken to matzo ball soup, fantastic kale salad and so much more. For me tho, the burger is a must have. The double cheeseburger actually is served with 3 patties and you can add bacon and runny egg to bring your experience to a whole new level. If you didn’t want to wait a long time then lunch is my recommendation but no matter how long the wait is, Au Cheval is in a league of its own, at least when it comes to their burgers. Enjoy!
As a self-proclaimed burger connoisseur, I had heard that Au Cheval had the best burger in America - so of course, my son and I had to try it during our visit to Chicago. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! We went right at lunch on a Tuesday and even though the restaurant was packed, we were able to get right in with no wait. We started with the "Crispy Fries," which were served with aioli and a fried egg on top - the perfect start to our meal. For our burgers, I opted for the single cheeseburger (which actually comes with two patties) with added bacon, while my son went for the double cheeseburger with an egg and bacon. The bacon was thicker and not crispy, but it added the perfect amount of sweetness to the burger, almost like pork belly. And while my son's burger was a bit too thick with three patties, we couldn't deny the incredible flavor and quality of the beef. Don't be confused by the names - the single actually has two patties and the double has three. But no matter which burger you choose, you're in for a treat. The food was truly incredible, and my son and I both agreed that this was easily one of the best burgers we've ever had. If you're a burger lover, you simply must make a stop at Au Cheval. The quality of the ingredients and the attention to detail in each dish truly make this place stand out. And despite its reputation and popularity, the staff were welcoming and accommodating, making our experience even better. Highly, highly recommend!
Was nervous reading the reviews about long lines - went there right at 11am on a Tuesday and luckily was able to be seated at a booth immediately. Small place so I can see why normally there would be a wait. When we left at 1230, a queue outside had formed. Highly recommend to come right at opening time during a weekday if you can. Star was definitely the bone marrow. Absolutely amazing and came with thick toast and the best savory jam. The single is plenty of burger for one person - partner loved it, I thought it was on the too salty side and wished for other toppings like lettuce tomato. A great burger for sure but actually wouldn’t say it’s the best imo. Fried bologna sandwich is an interesting dish but a little too greasy (lots of oil dripping down) and too saucy. Fries were great and came with an aioli. I’d say for a first visit, stick to bone marrow and a single. You’ll feel your arteries clogging immediately after eating but it’s worth a visit here if you can get seated quickly. Service A+++
First of all, the wait time is a bit longg….. but totally, 💯worth the wait! The food was superb!!! Our server was very knowledgeable and was on point with the suggestions (Ian was our server’s name) Because of him our dine in experience was very fab! Their food is something you’d come back again for. The space is a little bit tiny but everything else don’t matter because everything we ate was super good! ✨✨✨✨ Kudos to the staff!
We were recommended this restaurant by a friend and it was worth eating at. Getting a table will take a while as there are no reservations and it is walk-ins only. I highly recommend ordering the bone marrow appetizer. The burgers are very good but a little salty and the fries with the garlic aioli were amazing. Everything is fresh to order and tastes great.
If you have the time, this is a must stop. Best burger I’ve had. The quality is unreal. You will have to expect a wait, but it’s well worth it. Staff was very friendly and food came out quickly.
