Good is on the pricey side but is good, portions are generous for most dishes. Service can be quite slow at times.
Fancy, nice people, good food, and the menu is simple yet covers many bases. I will go here again. I love the Tofu Bahn Mi and the bloody Mary was awesome!
Have been going here off and on for several years. Took my son and parents to dinner for a birthday celebration and it seems that the food and service have changed drastically in the last year. The food was horrible and the service was less then up to par. I ordered a Caesar salad with chicken and the dressing was disgusting and was not correct. I asked for something else and it never came. My family was done with there food so I told them not to bother. We had to continue to ask for water. The restaurant was not full or busy. For the price I would have went to a different place. Very disappointed. The calamari was disgusting as well. Much different then it use to be. So many thing have changed. Probably won’t go back.
We have been here a few times through the years and the food has just never been all that. One time our fish and chips fish was basically raw and ugh, that was no fun. Recently the French dip meat was not cuttable with a knife and dry. And, the chicken in the Mediterranean bowl was dry and bland. Good hummus tho. Need to acknowledge that.
Came in and despite seeing more than 4 open tables in the restaurant they made us wait 15-20 mins. Wouldn’t even sit us in one of the three empty booths to wait so my elderly parents didn’t have to sit on the hard bench in the waiting area. We agreed to hold off on ordering food until they wanted but no.
Service was slow as they were understaffed/bussers were hanging out and not clearing dishes. Waiter never offered a second beverage and was generally quick to rush off after each brief interaction. Stick to the simple meals here as the more expense plates are just disappointing especially at the cost point. I had the Roasted Beet salad (very tasty) with salmon (way too salty but cooked well). My wife had the Sopa De Mar which was a complete disappointment. The dish was served lukewarm, very little flavor overall as they just dumped a can of low quality stewed tomatoes in a pan with some oil, stewed tomatoes were hardly cooked down and tasted raw, and the seafood quantity/quality was completely lacking for a $30 dish. It was served with two cheap shrimp, six tiny clams, and maybe 2 oz of fish - what a joke... I have tried (visited more than 10 times) to like this location as it is a 5 minute drive from my house but it just comes off as pretentious. I wish South would take a little more inspiration from Spenard Roadhouse....
I really liked the layout of this building with the attached coffee shop, lounge seating and restaurant. Would like to try the chef's seating area in the future. Our server was easy-going and made great suggestions. We appreciated the fresh vegetables and properly cooked local red salmon. No judgement when we decided on two desserts! Thanks, Devin!
While the food is amazing the service today was terrible. They got my name wrong for my order, didn’t make it to go as requested. Then when they did pack it up for me they didn’t supply any silverware or napkins.
We received fantastic service and absolutely wonderful food. Most definitely will return.
Very nice place to dine out. Beautiful arrangements and combinations of food
We came in for dinner. Nothing really wrong with the restaurant. But would say the place is a bit pricey for what it is food, place and service wise. It is just a simple eatery with a prime price tag. So if you have proper expectations you will enjoy it. I heard their brekfast/brunch is better than dinner
Have been to both the Restaurant and Coffeehouse, and loved them both! Great service, very pleasant atmosphere and delicious food! Highly recommended
Favorite place in Anchorage! Service is quick and the food is high quality. I've only tried the burger and fish and chips, but they were both phenomenal. Burger was cooked perfectly and the cod had a light, deep fried crust covering moist, flakey fish. I loved the tartar sauce and even the French fries were seasoned and cooked to perfection! Can't wait to go back!
Love this restaurant. Great food and coffee, including gluten-free options. I can always find something here to eat that makes the wait worthwhile.
This restaurant is truly one of the best I've ever been to, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. First of all, the food at South is absolutely delicious. The menu is full of creative and flavorful dishes, made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. From the Southern-style fried chicken to the seafood gumbo, every dish I tried was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. In addition to the food, the atmosphere at South is warm and inviting. The restaurant has a cozy, intimate feel, with comfortable seating and beautiful decor. It's the perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal with friends or family. Another standout feature of South is the service. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, and they go out of their way to ensure that every guest has a wonderful dining experience. Whether you're looking for recommendations on the menu or need help selecting the perfect wine to pair with your meal, the staff at South are always happy to help. Finally, I have to mention the coffee at South. It's some of the best I've ever had, and the coffeehouse portion of the restaurant is the perfect place to grab a cup of coffee and catch up with friends or get some work done. Overall, I would give South Restaurant + Coffeehouse five stars without hesitation. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the service is top-notch. Whether you're looking for a delicious meal or just a great cup of coffee, South is definitely worth a visit.
Had a bit of a wait, was a little weird that people who came in after us got seated before us but got seated a few minutes later. Food looked good and tasted amazing. The peanut butter pie was so rich but tasty and I ate the entire slice!
Not our server's issue at all, but kitchen service was soooo slow. We knew we would have to wait to be seated but not wait an additional hour for food, once seated. Food was not as good as in the past; not nearly as good, and the prices have increased, alas.
For starters, this place has really good coffee with the quality and variety of a coffee shop. We came for breakfast one morning and several items on the menu jumped out. Our server was excellent and quite helpful. Across the board, we had large and satisfying portions. The combined hash had hearty, fresh veggies, good subtle flavors, and everything came together well on the plate. South wasn't on my radar, but it should definitely be on yours. It's a lovable spacious place I'd happily return to.
The food was great, especially the French toast! Fluffy and delicious. Would go back again:)
The biscuits are the best I've had in quite some time. friendly staff and good service. And the fruit isn't just a bunch of melon in a bowl.
