We've been big fans of The Flour Box since we moved to Winston-Salem, from New York, five years ago. With COVID-19 making a huge impact on how we eat out, a review seemed overdo.
It always seems like there's an abundance of coffee shops, but seldom do you run into fantastic tea shops. Finding the Flour Box in a quaint little corner of Old Salem felt like my own little heaven on earth. The atmosphere was cozy, tucked away, and quiet. The menu offered quality assortments of food, intentional about sourcing local ingredients. Best of all, it went well with tea! Black tea, green tea, caffeinated, decaffeinated they broke out it out! The varieties of tea span from several countries across the world and it always felt like I could come back and try something new.
They've since moved to the Henry F. Shaffner House downtown, which feels like an appropriately fancy upgrade to compliment the experience of tea time. As far as COVID-19 goes, dining inside is a personal choice. I've struggled with it, as someone who loves to eat out, but also wants to comply with safety guidelines. This is the only place in town I still frequent considering. With a one year old in tow now, I have always felt the staff was incredibly kind, giving her the same level of hospitality we've always been shown. They have also been considerate of safety and kept us separated from other groups by putting us in entirely separate rooms. Always masked and trying to keep their distance wherever they could, they're a great group of folks who have adapted well to a rough year. Highly recommend it!

What a wonderful place to relax and have tea. The service was delightful and the food was tasty. They have a fantastic hot and iced tea selection, which they are able to serve in a carafe. I will take all of the iced tea that I can get on these hot North Carolina summer days.

Such a lovely place! The people who work here are so nice and professional. The food, tea and French pressed coffee is amazing. My mother and I have been many times and will continue to come. You can dine for a casual lunch or splurge and do the English Tea Service. Each you will have an amazing time and enjoy delicious food and drinks.

Responding to Terri Matthews’ review below. We were customers at The Flour Box when this group was there. They were loud, rude, and obnoxious. They we so bad we asked to move our table, which the staff pleasantly accommodated our request.
And on top of that they did not wear masks! In fact, my husband confronted Terri Matthews by the bathroom and asked where her mask was. She lied and said it was at the table and it wasn’t. The menu clearly states that a 20% gratuity will be added for parties of 6 or more. If they were stupid enough to add a tip on top of that, that is their fault. Rest assured the staff would not have asked for a tip, just like any restaurant would not ask for an additional tip.
Finally, we found the food and service to be outstanding! After we were moved to a quieter room we throughly enjoyed our Afternoon Tea experience. We cannot recommend this lovely cafe enough!

Had full tea here today with my husband and loved everything! The perfect way to spend a rainy day. We got Earl Grey and Blackberry Raspberry Tea and enjoyed both. The service was prompt and friendly and we had a wonderful selection of food on our tea tray. Croissant sandwiches, cucumber Dill treats, beet slaw and amazing scones with clotted cream! It's located on the ground level of a beautiful bed and breakfast I'd love to stay in someday!

Absolutely Adorable little Tea Room and Cafe located INSIDE of Old Salem. I went with a larger group for a special event and everyone was so nice and accommodating. We had full tea with several flavors of teas available and also a lovely assortment of sandwiches, biscuits, and delicious little treats. We did not experience the cafe menu but based on how good everything was that we ate I will definitely be returning for lunch! A couple in our party had some dietary restrictions, gluten-free and vegetarians, and they were not only able to accommodate them but the individuals who were given the gluten-free options were amazed at how good it was. I was tempted to try their food as well, it looked so good! The staff was great and they worked very hard to make it a lovely event for us. Will definitely be returning.

We had a wonderful high tea! The food was delicious and there was a wide verity of teas. The staff was amazing!!! They truly went above and beyond.
I will also note- DO NOT park across the street! I have been to the Henry Shaffner House multiple times and had always parked there but this time my car was towed. The lovely staff helped me get to the towing company and retrieve my car.

About Town
4 stars because it's quite expensive, but the food quality is excellent. Our service has been very good, so no complaints there. Have been here 2 times. Tea choices were excellent, many things offered on the menu. Flat breads are great as well as sandwiches. The scone I had was incredible w/lemon curd and Devonshire type cream. Could not have been any better! Please keep this place in business, it's the only tea room I know of in Winston-Salem.
