I don’t want to give this place an awesome review, because that means more people will go there and make it even harder for me to get a table…sigh…

Anyways - what a meal! Fresh Lake Herring (fried or grilled, I chose fried) on a bed of wild rice, seasonal greens and asparagus. *chefs kiss*

It was a perfect meal. Amazing view. Excellent service (our server was welcoming, attentive and drinks/food arrived rapidly).

I’d give it 6 stars if I could. Not to be missed when in GM.

Delicious food! We got the charcuterie board, so good. Smoked salmon, great cheeses, and crackers. Fresh fish right out of Lake Superior. Beautiful presentation! Highly recommend the mushroom tacos and the charcuterie board.

Never disappointed. Amazing fresh food and wonderful atmosphere with great staff! Came to celebrate our wedding anniversary (we were there 12 years ago to celebrate another anniversary). Can't wait to come again!

Unfortunately, we didn't have a pleasant experience here.
When we were greeted we were told to wait so they could get a table set up. When the greeter walked back, we were abruptly told with an unfriendly demeanor that we weren't standing in the right spot and needed to get out of the way from workers coming by. It was not busy and not obvious we were in the way.
Our waitress Hailey was very nice and attentive, the food was good, and you have a beautiful view of Lake Superior.
When we were done eating, I took one of my 2 toddlers out of her high chair and I turned to grab my leftovers when someone cleaning tables rudely snapped at us that we shouldn't be letting our kid play with that (a long cord hanging down from a lighted sign right at the heighth of a toddler). I had no idea my child was doing it and of course immediately stopped her. My husband and I were so taken aback by the anger in her voice and the way she glared at us as if we had let our child run rampant. I appreciate being told about the cord but I was harshly scolded instead of given a caring voice of concern. 95% of my Google reviews are 5 stars as I think we need to give more praise than criticism in this world. I only write negative ones when someone is disrespectful or blatantly rude. I will never come back here due to the way we were treated.
If you do eat here, do not bring young children as it is not kid friendly. I highly recommend Bluewater Cafe down the street--they are so sweet to my girls, but they were closed today so we didn't have that option.

We stopped here for dinner after a day trip to Lutsen Mountains for our anniversary. The wait was about 45 minutes even before dinner rush (we got there around 3pm) but the wait was worth it! Gorgeous views of Lake Superior at every table and a lounging area outside right at the shore. The food was top notch and hug serving sizes! We will definitely be back.

Lots of people have recommended Angry Trout Cafe to us as a must-eat when in Grand Marais so naturally, we had to go. We went on a Saturday morning and were seated right away beside the window with a lovely view of Lake Superior. We ordered their fried oyster appetizer, fish tacos & shrimp tacos. They misheard the shrimp as shiitake but promptly fixed it for us which was nice. Everything tasted fresh and the place reflects how much the owners and staff take care of the cafe.

Very popular restaurant and well worth the wait time! We skipped rocks into the lake and watched people do the same as we were on vacation and in no hurry!😀 Enjoyed the seagulls, rock skippers, Lake Superior, eating outside, friendly servers, healthy food, and a laid back atmosphere is what we were looking for during our vacation in Minnesota/Canada. If a person is in a hurry, maybe you need to check out a fast food place!

So glad Angry Trout Cafe was open for Hot Mulled Wine, and a lite appetizer of smoked salmon, local cheeses and horseradish cranberry sauce. We drove to Grand Marais after hiking in frozen Grand Portage State Park. The service was fantastic and I bought a copy of the Angry Trout Cafe notebook filled with recipes, stories about local friends and businesses, and strong culture of sustainability. Maybe next time Hot apple cider will make the fall/winter menu ….. ;)

Angry Trout Cafe was a perfect place to have lunch the day we were exploring Grand Marais. The view was spectacular from our table. We wanted to dine on the deck, but the flying insects were annoying, so we opted for inside. We appreciated the hostesses honesty and giving us the heads up.

There were four of us and we all ordered the same, Fish & Chips. Their chips were Waffle Fries, which I found to be odd. However, they were crisp and went well with the the crispy fish. The breading on the fish was thick and seasoned well. The piece of fish was also a hefty thick slice of meat, so they complimented each other. The cole slaw was creamy, which I prefer over a vinegar & oil. If I lived up here during Lent, this would be a go to for my Friday Fish.

Three of enjoyed a glass of white wine and the fourth went for a soda. The wine was a nice pour, so one glass was enough for our meal.

The service was friendly and quick. The staff was hustling, it was peak season when I was there. I told our server that I was not a fan of tartar sauce and she encouraged me to try theirs. I did and I was blown away, it was the first tartar sauce I have ever liked. Not being a tartar sauce fan, all I can tell you is that its flavor was more flavorful.

They do charge a service fee for using a plastic card and they do not allow dogs on the patio or deck. No emotional support dogs allowed. Only dogs allowed are service animals. Only reason I am sharing this, is they had multiple signs up telling guest the rule.
