Really good coffee! The master(owner) recommends perfect taste and he brews coffee with the heart! Had a good time with chocolate. Highly Recommended, you should definitely go this place. you will know why he got 5 stars in google map.

This place is an experience! I’ve been meaning to leave a review since last October, so when I say this place is unforgettable I mean it.

If you appreciate unique, thoughtful, and meaningful experiences, you’ll enjoy Koana. I talked with Brian about the different coffee he had and life on the island.

This is *not* a quick, drive through, caffeine fix, foo foo drink type of place so manage your expectations. This is a mom and pop owned operation that still has the love and passion that many small businesses are known for. I can only hope they preserve this for years to come.

Did I mention the coffee was fantastic? I returned multiple times on a 4 day trip, and the experience was consistently amazing. Prepare to fall in love.

We thought we would just do a quick coffee run but Koana is more then just a coffee shop. Brian, the owner, was wonderful! He took the time to individually figure out which coffee we would enjoy most. We watched him brew the coffee using the pour over method. We had a wonderful conversation about Hilo and the Mountain View community. Koana is more then just coffee it's a welcoming place for both tourists and locals.
10 out of 10, I recommend! The perfect spot for a delicious cup of coffee and great conversation.

Highly recommend this nice coffee shop near Volcano. It feels warm and cozy, and had ample space indoors and outdoors. You can enjoy your coffee in the middle of the nature.

The coffee was great. We got an iced medium-light roast and a mocha. The owner, Brian, gave us options based on our requests and ground the beans fresh. Brian was also very friendly and chatty which made the overall experience 5-star.

Amazing experience! The owner took the time to ask us what roast of coffee we enjoyed. Then he let us smell the different types of coffee and we were able to pick one. He let us smell the ground beans and made the pour over in front of us. This coffee tasted amazing and I will be coming back for more!! Thank you!

Brian was so kind, welcoming, and knowledgeable about his craft, as well as what to do around the island! As everyone else has mentioned, it wasn’t the quick coffee stop we intended, but for fantastic reason. Good things take time, and my black coffee mixed with chocolate lava was more than just good. Lots of good spice and flavor that you don’t expect in a coffee or hot chocolate. Just chatting with Brian, you can tell that his heart is in everything that he does, from the cup of pour over he’s making to the larger ventures he’s planning to benefit the community who loves him. Thanks for the coffee experience, Koana! Can’t wait to come back!

We just happened to be on our way to the east side of the island after hiking Volcano National Park and my husband found this amazing place. They brew their coffee in a very traditional way and have a lot of interesting items in their shop. I highly recommend adding this as a stop if you are in the area!

Koana is an extraordinary experience. Not your average coffee stand, this artist owned, specialty coffee shop serves only the best of locally sourced, organic coffee, tea and chocolate. Located in the charming farming town of Mountain View, Koana is a must stop.

Owner, artist, master craftsman and visionary Brian has created a local hub that survived the pandemic and offers more than the best pour over coffees in the world. Upon entering Koana, you are warmly greeted and introduced to the many drink options available. After making your selection, Brian creates individual pour over drinks customized to suit your taste. From the first sip, you know that you are experiencing the best that this premier coffee producing area has to offer.

Along with fragrant, full bodied coffee drinks, the teas and chocolate shots are also a delight. The Hojicha Milk from Japan was wonderful and refreshing. Coffee is served without milk so that the flavors can be fully appreciated. If you’d like to take a taste of Hawaii home with you, Koana offers bagged coffee, tea, chocolate and specialty items for sale in their shop.

You’re invited to stay, sip and linger awhile. There’s interesting local history about the area with old pictures from the farming days. It’s also fun chatting with Brian between customers to hear about his background and how he came to open a specialty coffee shop in Mountain View with his family after living in Japan for many years. Brian regularly hosts artistic events for the community in their building and seeks to bring everyone together with a strong Ohana vibe.

Located next door to the well known Mountain View Bakery and near Saucy Mamas Food Truck, this power trio packs a culinary punch. We loved all three!

If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by and meet Brian at Koana. You’ll be glad you did!

Coffee and tea enthusiasts definitely a must visit and taste! Curated tea and coffee flavors. We got white and oolong tea (BI grown). Pour over looked amazing, but we didn’t try yet. Pro Tip: get their hot chocolate shot and pair with one of the pour overs. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Aloha

I just recently moved to the Big Island and tried Koana coffee a few days ago. I've been back every day since. Not only is Brian (owner) and the staff (Becca and Nikki) super friendly, welcoming, and helpful ... the coffee and goodies are DELICIOUS!.

I tried the medium roast drip coffee and they gave me a sample of the lava shot which was so creamy and had an awesome hit of spice at the end. It's great to sip with a cup of drip coffee. I also tried their oolong tea which is locally supplied. It was light and not overpowering which I enjoy given I'm still learning about different teas. The shop also has banana bread from local bakers and I ate a loaf in just two nights by myself (sad but true.) It was that good. I can't wait to try their ice cream sandwiches as well! I heard that is perfection!

I really love the atmosphere and vibe there. It's great to see how close and supportive everyone is of the local farms and local artists. There is a wall of unique and fun pieces created by local artists that you can purchase and plenty of bagged coffee and chocolate are available as well.

This coffee shop has me hooked and they have really made me feel right at home! YOU MUST CHECK IT OUT! (I added a photo of the super friendly owner, Brian, and his epic roasted marshmallows that go on top of their seasonal coffees. It makes the shop smell so good!)
