This is not your typical crunchy-granola eatery so ubiquitous in this area. Decided to try the Miso Bowl and from the very first bite all the way through I was not disappointed. Definitely a go-back for me--I need to eat my way through their entire menu. Unique dishes, laid-back atmosphere, decent prices. Clearly a popular place as the line was long, but the efficient (and very friendly) staff kept us moving and served me quickly. My new when-in-Nevada-City-must-eat-here place!

I've been here a few times, but this visit was especially enjoyable. The service was wonderful. The gal at the counter was very patient as we decided on our order and made several substitutions.
The food was great, as well - fresh, colorful, straightforward, and healthy. I had the special, the Seoul Bowl, and it was delicious. Fresh veggies, house-made kimchi, and a yummy miso-sesame dressing were just some of the ingredients. My friend built her own salad and loved every bite.
Be warned, though... Heartwood's food is uber healthful, and the menu is rather small (just salads, bowls, toasts, and miso soup, plus beverages and pastries), so it may not suit picky eaters or folks wanting a typical restaurant experience.
But if you like fresh produce, healthy grains and cheeses, and creative beverages, you'll probably love this place!

I absolutely love the food here. I literally stumbled across this place on accident when I was hangry and looking for a place to eat one day. No clue it existed beforehand. I just ordered the Special for the day, which was a Kitcheri Bowl and I have been hooked to the point where I ate the same thing a few times after until I actually read the menu! I still haven’t expanded my order much, but I come for the smoked salmon, cream cheese, fresh dill and fermented onions on gluten free peasant bread alone. Had one today and went all the way home to the Bay Area and I still want that right now after 6 hours! I’m looking forward to actually trying more, maybe even a juice. The space is cute and I like the metal cups for free water and the way they compost your leftovers. Looking forward to my next meal there!

The heart of gold was nice. The turmeric gives it some spice and the other ingredients give it an effervescent sweetness. If you play your cards right, you can eat for a reasonable price. However, I did not.
The greens in the bowl were too big. It'd been nice if they were chopped to be about the same size as everything else in the bowl. This would make it easier to mix, and make me feel less like a rabbit imo.

Delicious food with good vegan choices. Loved the California bowl and the tumeric mixture drink. The seed bread is definitely to have and buy some to take home. Fun ambiance too.

Listen, I'm not trying to throw shade, but this place has a serious attitude problem. They tout themselves as a great spot for vegan eats, but when I visited the first time a couple years ago, the girl taking my order was a snarky-larky about helping me figure out what my options were. She actually said something to the effect of, "well some vegans think honey is vegan, so that counts." What?! No ma'am. Honey is not vegan, and even if some "vegans" think it is, that doesn't actually make it any more desirable for the rest of us. I found a standard that I like, and it's the only thing I've gotten the four or five more times I've visited since then. Every time I've been there, the staff has been intentionally unfriendly, despite my obvious charm, and not just to me, but to all their customers. They just don't have any sense of customer service above "that will be $49.99" (for two meals)...
Today we ordered our food online, because pandemic, and I think I've given them their last chance. Their website clearly says they are open for curbside pickup and bulk orders. Well, understandably the street was closed off for outside dining, so we parked just around the corner. We actually called them to ask where they'd like us to park, I figured they'd have at least given this some thought, but no. The guy on the phone didn't know what to tell me, and basically said "uuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh" the whole call because he couldn't actually figure out a simple problem. So we parked around the corner, and went in to pick up the order. OOOOOHHHH, that's what's going on! You're not actually doing curbside pickup, you're bucking the county mandate and serving your customers unmasked INSIDE your little restaurant. Yuck. Then, they forgot our drink, and couldn't figure out which drink we'd ordered. This place needs to get its sh*tuff together. It's a huge disappointment too because their food is all so local and fresh. If their actual food was in any way second rate, I would give one star.
Good food (if they can get your order right).
Not an overall good experience.

Very nice golden milk drink (hot, with oat milk), very nice sushi bowl with salmon. Will definitely return.

Bad service, can't even bring your food too the table with 4 staff and as many customers, fresh juice warm and not fresh. Apple juice was brown with as much foam as juice. Clearly 100% not fresh or pressed as menu states (seems masticated with high speed). Food is healthy and salmon is good hence 2 stars

Great coffee. The salmon toast was out of this world with big chunks of hot smoked salmon, cream cheese, and pickled onions. The gluten free bread is simply amazing, hearty, nutty, and densely delicious.
